    Open Access•Bernard Comrie, Raoul Zamponi•ARTICLE•Cadernos de Linguística e Teoria…•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 12

Akabea belongs to the Great Andamanese family, one of the two indigenous language families of the Andaman Islands. All that remains today of this family is a handful of "rememberers" of so-called Present-day Great Andamanese, based on the language furthest removed from Akabea. None of the traditional languages was the subject of professional linguistic documentation or analysis. However, two government officials collected extensive material, with…

  • A bird’s-eye view on South Asian languages through LSI: Areal or genetic relationships

Open Access•Lars Borin, Anju Saxena et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of South Asian Languages…•2020

We present initial exploratory work on illuminating the long-standing question of areal versus genealogical connections in South Asia using computational data visualization tools. With respect to genealogy, we focus on the subclassification of Indo-Aryan, the most ubiquitous language family of South Asia. The intent here is methodological: we explore computational methods for visualizing large datasets of linguistic features, in our case 63 featu…

  • Revisiting Greenberg’s “Generalizations about Numeral Systems” (1978)

    Open Access•Bernard Comrie•ARTICLE•Journal of Universal Language•2020

This article examines seven of the 54 generalizations on numeral systems presented by Greenberg in 1978 either as absolute universals or as universal tendencies. Five of the generalizations deal with details of the arithmetic structure of numeral systems, with particular reference to the order of elements in the numeral expression and to the use of subtraction and related phenomena in numeral expressions. It is shown that the details of these gen…

El fenmeno es aqu examinado en las lenguas pertinente…

  • Language Contact and Documentation / Contacto lingüístico y documentación

Bernard Comrie, Lucía Golluscio•BOOK•Language contact and documentation•2015

The volume is highly relevant to the current regional and international discussion on endangered languages, language contact, documentation and areal typology. The publication is the outcome of a fruitful theoretical and methodological exchange between Latin American scholars and international scholars working in other regions. Most of the papers target Latin American languages. Additionally, new insight into the contact situations in Indonesia, …

For the first time, a broadly cross-linguistic perspective is adopted. The present volume, consisting of an overview article and twenty-odd in-depth studies of ditransitive constructions in individual languages from different continents…

This collection of articles highlights a selection of on-going research projects. Phonological, morphological, and syntactic issues are addressed by international experts on Maltese. The diachronic development of Maltese, its age-long contact with Italo-Romance, and the present diglossic situation with co-official English are the topics of a variety of contributions to this volume. The repercussions that the promotion of Maltese to the status of …

With regard to case, topics include descriptions of the case systems of two Caucasian languages, the problems of determining how many cases Russian has and whether Hungarian has a case system at all, the issue of case-combining, the retention of the dative in Swedish dialects, and…

Bernard Comrie defines tense as the grammaticalisation of location in time. In this textbook he introduces readers to the range of variation found in tense systems across the languages of the world, bringing together a rich collection of illustrative material that student and specialist alike will find invaluable. This systematic account of the data is carefully integrated with a theoretical discussion of tense that is sensitive both to the range…

Words like boomerang and woomera, kangaroo and koala, mallee and mulga are quintessentially Australian. Australian Aboriginal Words in English is the definitive account of the history of these and other words borrowed from Aboriginal languages into English. It is also a fascinating insight into the contracts between the first Australians and the European settlers. \nIn 1788 there were some 250 languages in use in Australia. This book begins with …

  • Linguistic Diversity in the Caucasus

    Bernard Comrie•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Anthropology•2008•Cited by: 11•References: 24

The Caucasus is characterized by a relatively high level of linguistic diversity, whether measured in terms of number of languages, number of language families, or structural properties. This is in stark contrast to low levels of linguistic diversity in neighboring areas (Europe, the Middle East), although the Caucasus does not reach such high levels of linguistic diversity as are found in New Guinea. There is even a variation between greater div…

  • Data on the Noun Phrase Accessibility Hierarchy

    Edward L Keenan, Bernard Comrie•ARTICLE•Language•1979•Cited by: 11

The material presented here is intended to illustrate the arguments presented in our article on Noun Phrase Accessibility (Keenan & Comrie [1972] 1977, hereafter NPA); it was originally intended that these data would be published as an appendix to that article. Exemplification is given for each strategy used to form relative clauses (RC's) in each language cited in Table 1 of NPA (pp. 76–9), except where adequate data appear in the body of the te…

  • Polite Plurals and Predicate Agreement

    Bernard Comrie•ARTICLE•Language•1975•Cited by: 9

Different kinds of predicate—nominal, adjectival, verbal etc.—may behave differently under predicate agreement when there is a difference between underlying and superficial subject. Data from a number of languages (Slavic, Romance, Modern Greek) concerning predicate agreement with the polite plural (semantically singular, but plural in surface structure) suggest that more verb-like predicates tend to agree with features of the surface subject, wh…

    Bernard Comrie, Edward L Keenan•ARTICLE•Language•1979•Cited by: 6

In the light of recent research on Noun Phrase Accessibility (NPA) and relative clause formation (cf. Keenan & Comrie 1977), the main principles of NPA are here clarified and modified. The proposals of Maxwell 1979 for revising the criteria which distinguish relative clause formation strategies, and for stating further generalizations in terms of the strategies thus defined, are considered in detail. It is concluded that Maxwell advances the unde…

    Open Access•Bernard Comrie•ARTICLE•Linguistics•2000•Cited by: 3•References: 7

What kind of input is necessary for a creature that has the linguistic potential of a human being actually to realize that potential? Various scenarios are investigated on the basis of the empirical evidence available, including feral children (who receive no input and do not develop language); and creoles, twin languages, and deaf sign languages (where it seems, clearly in the case of deaf sign languages, only on certain approaches in the case o…

  • On the origin of the Basic Variety

    Open Access•Bernard Comrie•ARTICLE•Second language Research•1997•Cited by: 3•References: 1

Three of the points made in Klein and Perdue's paper are addressed. The presence of the basic word order Agent-Verb-Patient in the Basic Variety may simply reflect the salience of this basic word order in the target language, as is also suggested by some comparable data from creoles. Complexity can indeed arise as a language tries to pay heed to competing, if not conflicting, demands, although it can also arise as a historical accretion of change…
