  • Elongated Retouched Points from the Middle Paleolithic Complexes of Obi-Rakhmat Grotto

    Open Access•Aliona Kharevich, A I Krivoshapkin et al.•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2025

This article discusses the technological and morphological variability of stone points from the Obi-Rakhmat variant of the Middle Paleolithic in Central Asia. Special attention is given to the category of convergent tools, as sets of elongated retouched points often serve as markers in the context of Middle Paleolithic laminar industries, which are typically associated with early manifestations of anatomically modern humans. The study of their mo…

  • Preservation of Middle Paleolithic Open-Air Sites in Low-Mountain Landscapes

    Open Access•K K Pavlenok, A Kogai et al.•ARTICLE•Vestnik NSU Series History and…•2025•References: 7

Purpose . The multi-layered Paleolithic site of Kuksaray-2 was discovered in 2021 on the right side of the Akhangaran River valley (Eastern Uzbekistan). During fieldwork of 2023 it was established that the lithic industry from layers 0–2 is associated with the MIS-3, and the most ancient complex from layer 4 may belong to the MIS-5. In 2024, exploration of the Kuksaray-2 site was continued by trench 3/2024, 5/2024, 6/2024, 7/2024 and 8/2024 to cl…

  • Small Blade and Bladelet Production in Central Asia at the Turn of MIS 7 and 6

    G Pavlenok, A Kogai et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2024

  • The Lithic Industry of the Kuksaray-2 Site (Eastern Uzbekistan)

    Open Access•K K Pavlenok, A Kogai et al.•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2024

The research of the Kuksaray-2 site with a minimally disturbed cultural-stratigraphic sequence was continued in 2024. According to the paleogeographic reconstruction, layer 0 represents deposits formed during MIS 3, subsequently reworked by soil formation processes in the Holocene. Layer 1 was also formed during MIS 3, but less affected by subsequent soil formation processes. Layer 2 was formed during MIS 4. The deposits of layers 3 and 4 were fo…

  • Cultural Mosaic of the Middle Paleolithic in Western Tien Shan

    Open Access•K K Pavlenok, A Kogai et al.•ARTICLE•Vestnik NSU Series History and…•2024•References: 12

Purpose. The term “archaeological frontier” was first applied to the Western Tien Shan about 10 years ago to explain the phenomenon of the early appearance of microblade knapping in the Middle Paleolithic industries. Based on the results of a comparative analysis of the collections of Obi-Rakhmat and Kulbulak and materials from other synchronous monuments in the region, it was suggested that the Western Pamir-Tien Shan could be a zone of competit…

  • Attribution and variability of multilayered Paleolithic complexes

Open Access•K Kolobova, Aliona Kharevich et al.•ARTICLE•Camera praehistorica•2024

The tool collections found in multi-layered Paleolithic sites are not only a result of various life activities that occurred at these sites, but they also correspond to the cultural or industrial variants in the contexts in which they were produced. The composition of the tool collections is contingent upon the extent of the excavated area of the site. The functionality of the tool sets may change over time in response to fluctuations in palaeoen…

  • Small Blade and Bladelet Production in Central Asia at the Turn of MIS 7 and 6

    Open Access•G Pavlenok, A Kogai et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2024•References: 12

We describe 27 parallel, narrow-faced, and burin-cores for small blades and bladelets from Kulbulak layer 23, Western Tien Shan, excavated in 2016 and 2017. In terms of typology, flat-faced (longitudinal and transverse), prismatic (carinated, subconical, and subcylindrical), and narrow-faced cores (including burin[1]cores) were identified. Scar pattern analysis suggests that regardless of the typological affiliation of cores, a uniform technologi…

  • The Emergence of Levallois Blade Industry in the Western Foothills of Tien Shan

    G Pavlenok, A Kogai et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2023

  • The Emergence of Levallois Blade Industry in the Western Foothills of Tien Shan

    Open Access•E Panteleeva, G Pavlenok et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 21

We describe fi nds from layer 24 of Kulbulak, Western Tien Shan, excavated in 2018–2019. On the basis of the age of layer 16 (MIS 5e) and the geological context of the deposits, the profi le of the site was subdivided into paleogeographic stages. Layers 25–22 likely correlate with the warming period in the second half of MIS 7. Primary reduction in layer 24 industry was based on parallel uni- and bidirectional techniques, with wide and narrow-fac…
