Between the Railway and the Minaret: Transregional Swahili Muslim Booklets and Transition in East African Print Culture, 1930–1960
This chapter discusses hitherto neglected Swahili pocket literature that reflects the joint efforts of East African welfare associations, mosques, publishers and authors. In the children’s booklet Muallimu wa watoto , in Swahili typed in Arabic script, and the multilingual prayer booklet Namaz , published in late ’30s Pakistan, we can see the entangled history of the expansion of the British colonial economy and Swahili print culture, and how the…
Introduction to Travelling Islam
At the core of this special issue, Travelling Islam: The Circulation of Ideas in Africa, lies the editors’ fascination with the circulation of ideas by means of African languages, texts and people in and from Islamic Africa. It draws inspiration from a previous work on “Travelling Texts Beyond the West,” co-edited by Clarissa Vierke and Annachiara Raia. Further input has been provided by a workshop organised in 2020 with the generous support of l…

To what extent do writing and orality coexist in a recited text? What is the nature of performer identity format…

Barbara F. McManus Mary Brown, Judith P. Hallett, Maria Marsilio, and Ann Raia Barbara F. McManus passed away in the early morning of June 19, 2015, from complications related to cancer. Her death is a particularly painful loss to CAAS.
