    Open Access•Мaya Kashuba, M A Kulkova et al.•ARTICLE•Уфимский археологический вестник•2026

The article overviews the interregional and local connections between groups of the Belozerka culture in the Northern Black Sea region. Earlier these connections were traced on the base of contemporary typology (metal items, partly ceramics, products made of different materials) and mapping. A recent research basing relies on the isotopic geochemical signatures (87Sr/86Sr) and is evident of the mobility of people from the coastal marine settlemen…

Changes in the ecosystem may be an important factor influencing the evolution of ancient communities. Wetland sites are among the most valuable “natural archives” for ancient history and environmental change reconstruction. Multidisciplinary research at the Serteya II site, located in the Dnieper-Dvina basin, allowed revealing the sequence of historical and natural events from 8,000 to 3,000 BC based on “natural archives”. The paleolandscape was …

The article presents the results of a complex interdisciplinary study of the Late Mesolithic cultural layer of the Zamil-Koba 3 — the only “pure” single-layer Final Mesolithic site in the Mountainous Crimea. New geomorphological, palynological, paleozoological, paleobotanical and malacological data, as well as radiocarbon dates on organic samples from hearths, were obtained as a result of the archaeological study of the site. The characteristics …

The Akhshtyrskaya cave site in northwestern Caucasus dates mostly to the Middle Paleolithic. In 1961, during the analysis of faunal assemblage from layer 3a, a permanent upper second molar of Homo (AKH 1) was discovered. Initially, it was attributed to fossil Homo sapiens. Here, we present new findings related to this specimen, specifically to its external and internal morphology, amount of enamel and dentine in the lateral part of its crown, and…

The application of geochemical methods (stable isotope δ13C, δ15N analysis, chemical elemental analysis and radiocarbon dating) for studying human and animal bones from burials and cultural layers of archaeological sites of Crimea made it possible to highlight the issues of the development of agriculture and cattle-bгeeding during the Late Bronze – Early Iron Ages. One of the controversial questions is the problem of transition from sedentary for…

    Open Access•M A Kulkova, Мaya Kashuba et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2022•References: 7

The Late Bronze Age crisis is one of the most significant events in human history an had occurred in about 1200 BCE. The aridization was one the reasons of a decline of agriculture, migrant expansion and the transition to nomadic style of life. In Eastern Mediterranean the collapse of the advanced civilizations such as the Mycenaean, Hittite, Canaanite, Akkadian occurred in this time. Open Access•Alisa Zubova, Aleksandr Kulkov et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 42

We describe a likely case of chronic maxillary sinusitis (CMS) in a Neanderthal skeletal sample from Chagyrskaya Cave, in the Altai Mountains. Signs of CMS were recorded in the Chagyrskaya 57 specimen, which is a fragment of a left maxilla. Alveoli of the upper fi rst molar are partially preserved, and so are the second and third upper molars, with adjacent parts of the walls, and the fl oor of the maxillary sinus. The fragment was found in layer…

A CT examination of 20 crania from the Pucará de Tilcara fortress, Argentina (late 8th to 16th centuries AD), was carried out. Criteria for identifying CMS included osteitic lesions in the form of focal destruction, and thickened and sclerotized walls of maxillary sinuses. To …

Pathological changes indicate a variable diet, including both animal and vegetable food. Non-metric analysis reveals several Upper Paleolithic retentions, but the overall combination is insufficient for tracing population affinities. Metrically, permanent teeth from Zamostye are similar to those from the Mesolithic bur…
