An open letter to the editors of the Journal of Language and Sexuality
In this open letter, I ask the editors of the Journal and its readers, to reflect on the Journal’s relationship to studies of language and Black sexuality, and consider new ways to reach scholars of Black life, culture, and language. Studies of Black language practices rarely deal with the ways that Black language practices are often complicated by gender/sexuality. And yet, there are scholars doing this work, but like Queer Linguistics, it often…
Ratchet Black Lives Matter
In July 2020, Megan Thee Stallion was shot. The vitriol directed towards her represented the ways certain kinds of Black women's bodies do not effectively garner collective forms of grief, or the public expression of empathy toward someone who experiences tragedy or suffers harm. The lack of empathy shown by many toward Megan falls in line with the ways that Black women, girls, and femmes are frequently disregarded-their bodies marked as excessiv…
Narratives of affect
Extending the work of those who center narratives in their discussions of affect, this essay considers black queer women’s (BQW) narratives describing the sensations associated with being in and out of spaces created for and by BQW. The narratives examine emerged during ethnographic interviews I conducted in Washington, D.C. between 2012 and 2015. Many BQW living in and around Washington, D.C. socialize within what is colloquially referred to as …

Nikki Lane Bringing Flesh to Theory: Ethnography, Black Queer Theory, and Studying Black Sexualities As Dorothy Hodgson tells us, the most common features of an ethnographic project involve “talking to, participating with, and observing the people who produce . . . texts, exploring the contexts of their ideas and actions, and often studying how their situations, ideas, and actions c…
Black Women Queering the Mic
Though there were and always have been djs, dancers, graffiti artists, and rappers who were Black women, they are placed on the periphery of hip-hop culture; their voices, along with "gay rappers" and "white rappers" devalued and their contribution to the global rise of hip-hop either forgotten or eschewed. This article is an attempt to articulate the existence of Black women who work outside of the paradigms of the "silence, secrecy, and a parti…
