  • An Iron Age Bronze Mirror from Aston, Hertfordshire

    Open Access•Tony Rook, P R Lowery et al.•ARTICLE•The Antiquaries Journal•1982•Cited by: 5•References: 13

The Aston mirror plate and its handle were found in ploughsoil, but were derived from a cremation burial which included two pottery vessels tentatively dated in the first century A.D. The area in which the discovery was made shows considerable activity in the Belgic and Romano-British periods. A detailed examination of the mirror, using, inter alia, light-section photomicrography, enables an attempt to be made to group the known mirrors using cri…

  • II.—A Technical Study of the Designs on the British Mirror Series

Open Access•P R Lowery, Richard Savage et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeologia•1976

We have studied the techniques of decoration of the backs of the British bronze mirrors according to the methods outlined by us in Lowery, Savage, Wilkins, 1971, 176 f., and the construction of the design on the newly discovered Holcombe mirror (Fox, 1973). Our intention is to examine the technical relationships between the mirror backs and to note some details of bronzesmiths' practice which they illustrate, and on which the Holcombe mirror shed…

  • The Technique of the Decoration on a Disc-Butted Axe from Romania

Open Access•P R Lowery, Richard Savage et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•1972

Among the objects from Romanian collections exhibited at the British Museum from January to March 1971 was a disc-butted axe from Someseni, near Cluj, Romania, the condition of whose surface is so good that a detailed study of the technique of its decoration is possible. A silicone rubber mould of it was made for this purpose (Pl. XV). The results of examination of the mould are interesting enough to justify summary publication even though no dir…

  • Scriber, Graver, Scorper, Tracer

    Open Access•P R Lowery, Richard Savage et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•1971•Cited by: 6•References: 2

In descriptions in the archaeological literature of the marks of workmanship characteristic of certain bronze objects of the insular Iron Age, confusion exists concerning terminology and possibly (though the imprecision of wording makes it difficult to be sure without re-examination of individual pieces) concerning technology also. Macrophotographs are seldom provided to illustrate discussion of Iron Age bronzework, even when marks of workmanship…
