Anthropological Praxis: Translating Knowledge into Action
Social science perspectives on drivers of and responses to global climate change
This article provides a review of recent anthropological, archeological, geographical, and sociological research on anthropogenic drivers of climate change, with a particular focus on drivers of carbon emissions, mitigation and adaptation. The four disciplines emphasize cultural, economic, geographic, historical, political, and social‐structural factors to be important drivers of and responses to climate change. Each of these disciplines has uniq…

The Academic–Practitioner Relationship
Working for the Federal Government
In this chapter, the author describes what practicing anthropologists do in federal government agencies. She concentrates her comments on life in federal agencies rather than her legislative branch as a Congressional adviser. A person can be part of the federal government and policy process without surrendering your anthropological calling card. It is important to keep in mind that variability is contextually and structurally driven – by one's ag…

Working for the Federal Government: Anthropology Careers
The federal government is arguably the largest employer of anthropologists outside of academia. The most comprehensive data on numbers of anthropologists are from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. These data and their limitations are described. This chapter argues that applied and practicing anthropology are at historic employment levels, with at least five agencies having "institutional presence" of in-house anthropologists. Much of the g…

Anthropology in Pursuit of Public Policy and Practical Knowledge
When I look backward, it seems easy to see the threads of continuity in my life. When I look forward, it is not that easy to see a plan, which makes me wonder whether this chapter is a convenient fabrication of hindsight. Practicing anthropologists have a particular challenge to create coherent careers because there is no one path or career for using anthropology to generate practical knowledge and action. All of the women in this Bulletin have f…

Rules of Address: Navajo Women in Los Angeles
Efforts to understand the use of address terms in American English have focused primarily on interactions between persons in academia or business organization, i.e., primarily Anglo middle/upper class. This paper compares this model (age and occupation) with the use of address terms by an urban ethnic minority. It is hypothesized that perception of ethnicity may be important in understanding the "semantic of power and solidarity."

Anthropology and Marine Extension: Can We Make A Difference
My first exposure to marine extension was a refreshing change from the bureaucratic world of Washington, D.C. In 1984 I was helping the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) prepare a management study to monitor outreach services to local communities, businesses, and the general public. The focus was on NOAA's services in the Pacific Northwest. I interviewed NOAA officials in the states of Washington and Alaska on the kinds and l…
MSAPA, A Local Practitioner Organization
This collection of articles from a local practitioner organization (LPO) results from a commitment by the Society for Applied Anthropology to encourage the viability and visibility of LPOs. SfAA and LPOs felt that Practicing Anthropology was an appropriate vehicle for exposure, and invitations were extended in 1989 to all LPOs to write about their organization, their members, and their work in order to share information and ideas with other pract…
The Inventions of Practice
The integration of applied and practicing anthropology into the professional mainstream has never been as apparent as in recent years. As this integration has proceeded, little attention has been paid to the variety of interpretations offered to describe current modes of anthropological practice. The authors suggest that the idea of practice is still in the process of being invented and devote their attention to discussing differences in some of …
Iron Triangle for Ethnography: In Remembrance of Miki Crespi
Miki was a big part of my life as a friend and colleague. Because we were anthropologists in federal agencies, and to some extent marginal as social scientists in agencies with bigger missions to pursue, we spent many hours talking about the respective roles and challenges for social scientists in federal agencies
