Work as an Entrustment and Its Addressees According to Leonardo Polo’s Transcendental Anthropology
This work expands upon Leonardo Polo’s anthropological proposal regarding human work as a distinctive entrustment from Creator to each created person. Situated within philosophical anthropology as a branch of knowledge devoted to a deeper understanding of the human being, it delves into the highest human dimension—the personal act of being—as the heart of this dedication, and breaks down the appeal to destiny. The goals to which human beings aspi…
Ethical Leadership as a Driver of Supervisor Technical and Social Effectiveness
A sense of purpose is generated when individuals perceive an authentic connection between their work and a broader transcendent life purpose beyond the self. Academics have shown significant positive effects of this driving force in life for employees and organizations, and thus the literature demands studies that analyze its antecedents, i.e., the potential factors that shape an individual's sense of purpose in life. Following an Aristotelian ap…
A personalist approach to business ethics
This article has a twofold purpose: first, it explores how Leonardo Polo's personalist anthropology enriches and enhances neo‐Aristotelian virtue ethics and second, it highlights how this specific personalist approach brings new perspectives to servant leadership. The recently revived neo‐Aristotelian virtue ethics tradition finds that MacIntyre's scholarship significantly contributes to virtue ethics in business—particularly his conception of pr…
Whose work? Which markets? Rethinking work and markets in light of virtue ethics
Neo‐Aristotelian virtue ethics applied to work and business theory have received increasing attention due to Alasdair MacIntyre's philosophy. At the same time, this approach has been accused of being inapplicable, a romantic nostalgia for an ideal world far from the reality of today's markets. Moreover, the more this theory evolves, the bigger the gap seems to become, as if good work were at odds with its economic dimension. This paper aims to ad…
Exploring the vulnerability of practice-like activities
We use this case to develop two arguments. Firstly, we illustrate the concept of "practice-like" activities and explore their vulnerability to institutional domination. Secondly, in light of the style of management on display after the takeover, we offer further support to MacIntyre's critique of management. Finally, based on the empirical data we reflect on the importance of organizational culture, as well as friendship and the achievement of a …
From Mary's Motherhood to the Immaculate Conception
This article analyzes Marian art in Spain from the tenth to nineteenth centuries in order to show how popular piety represented Mary's motherhood. Through art, including architecture, painting, sculpture, and oral preaching, a popular image of Mary emerged and, in turn, became key for understanding the history of the family in western Catholic countries. Studying the evolution of Marian iconography during this thousand-year period reveals a kind …
The inter-processual self
Rebuilding the Temple of Graces
The concept of “care” has recently emerged to expand the idea of rationality in economics, introducing insights that have traditionally been restricted to the so-called third sector (non-profit), and, as a result, questioning mainstream economics. This article is based on the thesis that the development and functionality of the market and the state are a result of something previous, i.e., the presence of the gift in social relations. The idea of…
Prudence as part of a worldview
This chapter aims to provide a better understanding of how the idea of prudence has changed through time, emphasizing the radical shift in the understanding of practical reasoning that took place in modern thought. In order to do that, this chapter first attempts to outline classical thought represented by Aristotle and Aquinas and characterized by the unity of knowledge and action. It then sketches major currents in relation to prudence after th…
