Some Carpenters' Marks in Arabic Numerals
This note discusses carpenters' marks in relation to the tools used to scribe or carve them, and two ways of marking timbers with Arabic numerals are illustrated from houses dating from 1577 and c.1600. The earlier date refers to a long series of numbers on a house in Cheshire, whereas the other example is representative of a group of houses in central Lancashire
