Zapis izgovora in izbor pravopisne različice angleščine v dvojezičnih slovarjih za slovenske priseljence v ZDA
Na prelomu 19. in 20. stoletja so na obeh straneh Atlantika začeli izhajati dvojezični slovarji, namenjeni slovenskim izseljencem v ZDA. V prispevku analiziramo, kako so avtorji štirih slovarjev (Kubelka 1904; Kubelka 1912; Košutnik 1912 in Kern 1919) v uvodnem in v slovarskem delu obravnavali izgovor ter zapis/pravopis. Podrobno smo preučili razlage izgovora v posameznih slovarjih in razumljivost teh razlag za ciljno publiko. Prav tako nas je za…
For the Benefit of my Countrymen”
An immigrant dictionary has been defined as a reference work specifically designed for an immigrant audience. The need for dictionaries with this audience has increased, given the movement of peoples in the 21st century. Lexicography requires a deeper understanding of the nature of such dictionaries. In the present study, we delve into lemma choice: Which lemmata should the lexicographer choose to meet the needs of immigrant users? What are the c…
Across Commas, Across Semicolons, Across Oceans
It is unfortunate that scholars have given scant attention to what can be called immigrant dictionaries. These books are significant to the history of (learner) lexicography; they meet pressing needs of immigrants and refugees. This article examines four immigrant dictionaries, Slovenian–English and English–Slovenian (Kubelka 1904, Kubelka 1912b, Košutnik 1912, and Kern 1919), published in the early twentieth century at a time when the Slovenian …
Oris slovarjev in priročnikov za učenje angleščine slovenskih izseljencev v ZDA v obdobju 1895–1919
Avtorice v raziskavi ugotavljajo, katere vrste informacij so bile izseljencem na voljo v preučevanih slovarjih in priročnikih (npr. razlaga izgovora angleš…
Uporabnost ameriškega spletnega slovarja za tujejezične uporabnike s stališča slovenskih uporabnikov
V članku najprej predstavimo raziskave o različnih vidikih rabe slovarjev, nato pa izsledke kvalitativne raziskave o rabi slovarjev, v kateri so sodelovali študenti Ekonomske fakultete. V okviru raziskave so iskali različne informacije v spletnem slovarju The Britannica Dictionary. Rezultati raziskave kažejo, kako učinkovit je preučevani slovar. Iz njihovih komentarjev je razvidno, da imajo določena pričakovanja glede vrste informacij, ki jih žel…
The Lexicographer’s Dream Audience
Interviews with undergraduate students from the University of Ljubljana, who are majoring in English and can be considered language specialists, investigated habits of dictionary use, look-up abilities, and perceptions of the utility and quality of definitions and illustrative examples. This contrasts with a parallel study (Farina et al. 2019) with undergraduates majoring in business and economics. Like the parallel study, this study was based on…
Problems in Online Dictionary Use for Advanced Slovenian Learners of English
This article reports on findings from interviews with students from the University of Ljubljana. The study is based on fourteen questions about participants’ habits of dictionary use, their look-up abilities, and their perceptions of the utility and quality of definitions and illustrative examples. Students were given nine contexts containing a clearly-marked common word used in an infrequent sense; they had to locate the relevant sense in the on…
