Information integration in person perception
This chapter presents some of the key findings from research conducted within the basic person perception paradigm. The preceding sections of this chapter have traced the development and expansion of the Information Integration Theory approach to impression formation. Traditionally, the study of impression formation has been associated with the person perception task. In this task, individuals are presented with personality trait information abou…
The futility of decision making research
We have each spent more than 50 years doing research that has had little impact. Even more lamentable is that our field, judgment and decision making (JDM), has on the whole had little impact during that span. We attribute that failure to the use of methodologies that emphasize testing models rather than looking for differences in behavior. The "cognitive revolution" led the field astray, toward the goal of studying model fit rather than comparin…

People who judge people
Experts who judge people usually provide opinions. It can be challenging to evaluate the professional performance of those experts, because for many domains there is no applicable external standard against which to verify the opinions. We review traditional methods for assessment and propose the purely empirical CWS approach as an alternative. Expert judgment entails discriminating among the various stimuli within the domain as well as being cons…

Expert Judgment
Two groups of professional auditors (expert ns = 10 and 11) and one group of 11 accounting students (novices) made judgments for 32 hypothetical auditing cases which were based on 8 dimensions of accounting-related information. Analyses indicated that the experts did not differ significantly from the novices in the number of significant dimensions; both the professionals and the students had roughly three significant factors. When evaluating the …

Do Consumers Evaluate Products by Adding or Averaging Attribute Information
Two empirical studies are reported in which tests are conducted between adding and averaging combination rules for evaluative judgments. The results indicate that attribute information combines by averaging. Multi-attribute models which assume adding are contradicted by the findings, and thus, provide an inadequate description of consumers' psychological processes
