  • Mimesis, Metaphysics and Aesthetic Science in Baumgarten and Nietzsche's The Birth of Tragedy

    Herman Siemens•ARTICLE•Modern Language Notes•2023

This paper investigates the notion of mimesis in Baumgarten's Meditationes (1735), the inaugural text of modern aesthetics, and Die Geburt der Tragödie , as two exemplary texts of aesthetische Wissenschaft . What meanings and functions do they give to 'mimesis' and the Aristotelian doctrine that art is an imitation ( Nachahmung, Abbild ) of nature? The main thesis is that both texts cast art as a Nachahmung of the creative principle of nature (na…

  • Conflict and Contest in Nietzsche's Philosophy

Herman Siemens, James Pearson•EDITOR•BOOK•Conflict and Contest in…•2018

While Nietzsche's works and ideas are relevant across the many branches of philosophy, the themes of contest and conflict have been mostly overlooked. Conflict and Contest in Nietzsche's Philosophy redresses this situation, arguing for the importance of these issues throughout Nietzsche's work. The volume has three key lines of inquiry: Nietzsche's ontology of conflict; Nietzsche's conception of the agon; and Nietzsche's warrior-philosophy. Under…

  • Nietzsche's Critique of Democracy (1870—1886)

    Herman Siemens, H W Siemens•ARTICLE•The Journal of Nietzsche Studies•2009•Cited by: 4•References: 1

This article reconstructs Nietzsche's shifting views on democracy in the period 1870—86 with reference to his enduring preoccupation with tyrannical concentrations of power and the conviction that radical pluralism offers the only effective form of resistance. As long as he identifies democracy with pluralism (Human, All Too Human), he sympathizes with it as a site of resistance and emancipation. From around 1880 on, however, Nietzsche increasing…

  • Nietzsche, power and politics

Herman Siemens, Vasti Roodt•BOOK•Nietzsche, power and politics•2008

Nietzsche's legacy for political thought is a highly contested area of research today. With papers representing a broad range of positions, this collection takes stock of the central controversies (Nietzsche as political / anti-political thinker? Nietzsche and / contra democracy? Arendt and / contra Nietzsche?), as well as new research on key concepts (power, the agon, aristocracy, friendship i.a.), on historical, contemporary and futural aspects…

  • Nietzsche and the Empirical

    Herman Siemens, H W Siemens•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Philosophy•2006•References: 4

This paper examines Nietzsche’s attitude to the empirical by concentrating on his concept of Empfindung (sensation, perception, feeling). In Section 1, five distinctive features of his use of ‘Empfmdung’ are described in relation to the philosophical tradition and some of his sources in 19th Century physiology. All five features, I argue, point to Nietzsche’s philosophical concern to stake out the limits of ‘Empfmdung’ as an aspect of human finit…

    Herman Siemens, H W Siemens•ARTICLE•The Journal of Nietzsche Studies•2002•Cited by: 7•References: 1

The post-war years have seen the emergence of a broad consensus on Nietzsche as a political thinker. Most commentators are in agreement on his strength as a critic of modernity, as they are on his weakness as a constructive political thinker. While exposing the failure of our most progressive projects and institutions (liberalism, democracy, enlightenment, etc.) to furnish rational justifications for themselves, Nietzsche is unable to offer us vi…
