Quantifying inter-dwelling air exchanges during fan pressurisation tests
Fan pressurisation tests (FPTs) are commonly used to measure air leakage in homes, to provide evidence for compliance with energy and ventilation standards in building regulations and inform energy models. The results are presented of 37 pressurisation and co-pressurisation tests on attached homes in the UK which measured inter-dwelling air exchanges during the FPTs. On average, 21% of the air leakage measured by the FPTs was found to be inter-dw…
The Effect of Catholic Education on Economic Ideology
Religious adherence, church attendance, and economic ideology have long been intertwined. We discuss the compatibility between Catholic doctrine and individual-based free market systems and then examine the effect of Catholic school attendance on an individual's belief in and support for a capitalist economic system. Using individual level survey data, we find a positive relationship between attendance at Catholic schools and capitalist ideology …
Evaluating the Potential for Harmonized Prediction and Comparison of Disposal‐Stage Greenhouse Gas Emissions for Biomaterial Products
The carbon footprint (CF) of biofuels and biomaterials is a barrier to their acceptance, yet the greenhouse gas emissions associated with disposing of biomaterials are frequently omitted from analyses. This article investigates whether harmonization is appropriate for calculating the importance of biomaterials’ disposal. This research shows that disposal stages could double a biomaterial's CF, or reduce it to the point that it could claim to be z…
Reflections on retrofits
To meet targets on fuel poverty, energy efficiency and carbon emissions existing homes need to be more energy efficient. We report the results of a participatory action research project to explore the challenges associated with energy efficiency retrofit programmes and ways to better implement future schemes
