Implications for food production, land use and rural development of the European Union’s Single Farm Payment
The visibility of agricultural subsidies and market illusions in the Common Agricultural Policy
This article demonstrates that the design and nature of agricultural support schemes has an influence on farmers’ perception of their level of dependence on agricultural support. While direct aid payments inform farmers about the extent to which they are subsidised, indirect support mechanisms veil the level of subsidisation, and therefore they are not fully aware of the extent to which they are supported. To test this hypothesis, we applied data…
Migration and implicit amenity markets
We first develop an empirical approach for generating measures of wage over or under compensation (incomplete compensation) for location attributes. We then devise a method to test whether migration is influenced by incomplete compensation in wages for location characteristics. An intercity wage regression is estimated where fixed effects capture the impact of site characteristics on wages. We then regress the fixed effects on a comprehensive vec…
A Dynamic Model of Migration With Public Sector Attributes
On the Role of Amenities in Models of Migration and Regional Development
The role of location‐specific amenities in human migration decisions, and subsequently regional development, is explored. A framework is developed which motivates a new assessment of existing alternative models of regional development, indicating the need for additional modeling efforts which focus upon amenities as critical elements in such analyses. The approach hinges upon the notion that amenity values are capitalized into wages, rents, or ot…

The Berlin Police Force in the Weimar Republic
The German Center Party and the Reichsbanner
The problem of paramilitary organizations in Germany after 1918 forms an interesting and crucial chapter in the story of the ill-fated Weimar Republic. The organizations which gained the most notoriety stood on the far political right, unreconciled and unreconcilable both to military defeat and to the republic which was the child of that defeat. But the republic did have its militant defenders, who were recruited on the democratic left and organi…
