Trends in Electronic Cigarette Use Among U.S. Adults: Use is Increasing in Both Smokers and Nonsmokers
OBJECTIVES: We assessed trends in use of electronic cigarettes among U.S. adults, demographic predictors of use, and smoking status of current electronic cigarette users. METHODS: Mixed-mode surveys were used to obtain representative, cross-sectional samples of U.S. adults in each of 4 years. RESULTS: Sample sizes for 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013 were 3,240, 3,097, 3,101, and 3,245, respectively. Ever use of electronic cigarettes increased from 1.8…
Language and Love: Generation Y Comes of Age Online
Social networking sites (SNS) provide adolescents with opportunities for content generation on a wide range of social issues, providing unique insight into the psychosocial development of adolescence. We explored SNS webpages viewed by a random sample of adolescents during the initial uptake of SNS use (2005) to describe their general language use. Adolescents aged 14 to 17 with home Internet access were recruited using list-assisted random digit…
Tobacco Smoke Incursions in Multiunit Housing
Objectives. We sought to describe the prevalence of secondhand tobacco smoke incursions reported by multiunit housing (MUH) residents, pinpoint factors associated with exposure, and determine whether smoke-free building policy was associated with prevalence of reported tobacco smoke incursions. Methods. Data are from a 2011 nationally representative dual-frame survey (random-digit-dial and Internet panels) of US adults aged 18 years and older. In…
A dual-frame sampling methodology to address landline replacement in tobacco control research
Prevalence estimates for cigarette smoking obtained from the dual-frame SCS-TC are comparable to those from other national surveys. A mixed-mode approach may be a useful strategy to transition cross-sectional surveys with established trend data to newer dual-frame designs to maintain compatibility with surveys from previous years and to include the growing number of households that do not have landline telephones
Community Participatory Research With Deaf Sign Language Users to Identify Health Inequities
Deaf people who use American Sign Language (ASL) are medically underserved and often excluded from health research and surveillance. We used a community participatory approach to develop and administer an ASL-accessible health survey. We identified deaf community strengths (e.g., a low prevalence of current smokers) and 3 glaring health inequities: obesity, partner violence, and suicide. This collaborative work represents the first time a deaf co…
US Attitudes About Banning Menthol in Cigarettes: Results From a Nationally Representative Survey
Menthol is a cigarette flavoring that makes smoking more appealing to smokers. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has regulatory authority to ban mentholated cigarettes to reduce youth uptake and encourage adult cessation. Survey findings indicate that more than half of all Americans (56.1%) and of Blacks alone (68.0% in one sample and 75.8% in another) support banning menthol. Endorsement of a ban—especially by Blacks, who have the highes…
The Effect of Acupuncture Utilization on Healthcare Utilization
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether acupuncture is a complement to or substitute for various medical services. DATA SOURCE: This study used managed care claims data from a midsize metropolitan insurance company from 2002. Zip code level data from the 2000 US Census was also incorporated. The original dataset contained medical and drug claims data for every eligible acupuncture user (n = 1688) and every 18th eligible nonacupuncture user (n = 16,282) c…
Self-Reported Smoking in Online Surveys: Prevalence Estimate Validity and Item Format Effects
OBJECTIVES: We assessed validity of self-reported smoking prevalence estimates from an online sample, and explored the impact of different item response formats on estimates. METHODS: Self-reported current smoking status was obtained from 110,837 respondents from the Harris Poll Online (HPOL) panel from April 2004 to January 2005. Current smoking prevalence was compared with national estimates from the 2004 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Sys…

Adolescent Pregnancy: Current Trends and Issues
This Clinical Report was retired June 2025. The prevention of unintended adolescent pregnancy is an important goal of the American Academy of Pediatrics and our society. Although adolescent pregnancy and birth rates have been steadily decreasing, many adolescents still become pregnant. Since the last statement on adolescent pregnancy was issued by the Academy in 1998, efforts to prevent adolescent pregnancy have increased, and new observations, t…
Health information-seeking behaviour in adolescence: The Place of the Internet
Reliability in Adolescent Reporting of Clinician Counseling, Health Care Use, and Health Behaviors
BACKGROUND: Accurate measures of health-care use by adolescents would be useful in managed care quality assurance, public health surveillance, and health-care research. OBJECTIVE: To assess test-retest reliability and factors associated with reliability of adolescent reports of clinician counseling, preventive health services, and health behaviors. RESEARCH DESIGN: A convenience sample of high school students (N = 253) completed identical paper-a…

The Price Effects of Increased Competition in Auction Markets
Bidding theory predicts low er selling winning bids (higher buying winning bids) as numbers of bidders incre ase. Alternative versions predict that winning bids fall (rise) with the second order statistic, the maximum order statistic, or 1/N. The authors test these pre dictions using data on underwriters' spreads on tax exempt bonds, offshore oil t racts, and National Forest timber. They estimate winning bids using general vari ables for the prod…
