  • How Wages Change

    Open Access•William T Dickens, Lorenz Goette et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic…•2007•Citada por: 15•Referencias: 5

Workers' wages are not set in a spot market. Instead, the wages of most workers-at least those who do not switch jobs-typically change only annually and are mediated by a complex set of institutions and factors such as contracts, unions, standards of fairness, minimum wage policy, transfers of risk, and incomplete information. The goal of the International Wage Flexibility Project (IWFP)-a consortium of over 40 researchers with access to individu…

  • The Costs of Price Stability

    Open Access•Steinar Holden•ARTICLE•Economica•2004•Referencias: 23

In most European countries, the prevailing terms of employment, including the nominal wage, can be changed only by mutual consent. This legal feature gives workers a strategic advantage in wage negotiations when employers push for a nominal wage cut. The upshot is a long‐run trade‐off between inflation and unemployment for low levels of inflation, in spite of all agents being rational and with no expectational errors. Specifically, downward nomin…

  • Wage‐setting under Different Monetary Regimes

    Open Access•Steinar Holden•ARTICLE•Economica•2003•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 14

In an economy with large wage‐setters (like industry unions), the monetary regime affects the trade‐off between consumer real wages and employment and profits faced by the wage‐setters. This paper shows that an exchange rate target, including participation in a monetary union, is likely to involve lower wages in the traded sector, and higher wages in the non‐traded sector, than does a price target. An exchange rate target also involves higher pri…

  • Wage Drift and Bargaining

    Steinar Holden•ARTICLE•Economica•1989•Citada por: 2

Empirical equations, based on a theoretical bargaining model, are estimated on data for wage drift in six industries and in the aggregate manufacturing sector in Norway. It is shown that the central wage settlement has a strong impact on aggregate and relative wages in the short run, and that this effect is not offset by wage drift. Wage drift is also found to depend negatively on the size of inventories. This is interpreted as arising from the e…
