  • Small Sites, Whole Settlements

    Open Access•Andrei Asăndulesei•ARTICLE•STUDIA ANTIQUA ET ARCHAEOLOGICA•2026

Small Cucuteni settlements are the majority of the recorded sites of the complex and a small minority of those investigated. This paper presents another magnetic plan of one of them, the upland settlement at Zmeu–Dealul Pandele (Lungani commune, Iaşi County), surveyed in May 2023 with a five-probe Sensys MXPDA fluxgate array over c. 2 ha, together with an analysis of its landform derived from airborne LiDAR. A minimum of some twenty burnt structu…

  • The Ursoaia Kiln (north-eastern Romania)

Open Access•Diana Măriuca Vornicu, Felix Adrian Tencariu et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2026

Excavated in 2025 at Ursoaia, north-eastern Romania, a Chalcolithic (fifth–fourth millennia BCE) bicameral kiln sets a new benchmark for prehistoric pyrotechnology. Its large working surface exceeds known Cucuteni–Trypillia and most Eurasian Chalcolithic examples, suggesting an intensification of ceramic production and an early shift towards craft specialisation in south-eastern Europe.

  • Large Rivers, Small Rivers

    Open Access•Alfred Vespremeanu-Stroe, Daniel Garvan et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2026

The spatial distribution of Chalcolithic settlements in the East Lower Danube Plain (SE Romania) shows markedly higher densities along small river valleys with low modern discharges, such as the Călmățui, Mostiștea, and Teleorman, which originate in the upper plains (150–300 m a.s.l.). In contrast, valleys of larger Carpathian-sourced rivers (e.g., Buzău, Ialomița, Argeș), host far fewer settlements. Our research explores whether these patterns r…

  • From Surface to Subsurface

Open Access•Radu Alexandru Brunchi, Radu-Alexandru BRUNCHI et al.•ARTICLE•STUDIA ANTIQUA ET ARCHAEOLOGICA•2025

While the site of Muntenii de Jos – La Biserică (Vaslui County) was first documented in 1910 based on surface finds, archaeological investigations were limited to a single field walk in 1976 that vaguely dated the settlement. In 2025, our team initiated a comprehensive non-invasive research project to map the planimetry, function, and chronology of this archaeological site. The investigation integrated guided drone flights for obtaining an orthom…

  • Mapping Cucuteni Pottery Networks

Open Access•Andrei Asăndulesei, Felix Adrian Tencariu•ARTICLE•ArchéoSciences•2025

Magnetometer survey to detect subsurface thermoremanent archaeological features, Detected features indicate ceramic production such as kilns and workshop areas, This identifies pottery production and distribution centres

Open Access•Casandra Mihaela Brașoveanu, Casandra BRAȘOVEANU et al.•ARTICLE•STUDIA ANTIQUA ET ARCHAEOLOGICA•2024

North-eastern Romania benefits of a high density of tumuli, belonging to various prehistoric or historic communities. Previous endeavors of our team have identified within this workspace, with the help of LiDAR data, aerial photographs and cartographical supports, a number of 1791 of such mounds, usually placed on hilltops, forming somewhat-linear arrangements, but also exceptional situations, such as the case of the tumular necropolis of Borșa- …

  • About old discoveries and new archaeological research in the Cucutenian settlement from Fedeleșeni-Dealul Cânepăriei, Strunga commune, Iași County, Romania

    Vasile Cotiugă, Andrei Asăndulesei•ARTICLE•Annales d Université Valahia…•2023

After older research (1928) and numerous recent incursions, the Fedeleșeni– Dealul Cânepăriei settlement continues to arouse the interest of specialists, especially due to the unprecedented discoveries made over time. It is precisely these recent pieces of information, the most interesting of which come from the excavation notebook of I. Nestor, unpublished until 2015, that have led to a new campaign of non-invasive investigations in this settlem…

IV-III a. Chr.

  • A chalcolithic pottery kiln from the Cucuteni-Cetățuie settlement (Iași County, Romania)

Open Access•Felix Adrian Tencariu, Felix-Adrian TENCARIU et al.•ARTICLE•STUDIA ANTIQUA ET ARCHAEOLOGICA•2022

As a result of the magnetic survey on an area of more than five hectares, located south-west of Cetățuie, we are currently aware of an extension of the Cucutenian habitation, consisting of numerous burned and unburned structures, pits and two defensive ditches in the form of circular arcs. The magnetic map allowed, beginning with the 2017 campaign, the placement of smaller (test trenches) or larger excavation units for the verification of various…

  • A bolt from the blue

Open Access•Felix Adrian Tencariu, Andrei Asăndulesei et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2022•References: 46

The article presents the context and multiple investigations of an unexpected discovery, made during the 2020 excavations, from the Ruginoasa-Dealul Ruginii Chalcolithic site in north-eastern Romania. The site, known before our research (aerial photography, geomagnetic survey, test trenches) only for its visible traces of WW2, belongs to the Cucuteni culture, phase A, and consists of five rows of burned dwellings and several pits. The surprise, a…

The authors study the connections between salt resources, salt exploitation and Roman army in Dacia. Even though salt resources are attested almost across the entire province of Dacia (excepting perhaps the western part), the eastern part is the richest not only in salt deposits, but also salt springs. Salt was important not only for the troops (food — nutrition and preservation, hide and leather processing, horses’ and other animals’ alimentatio…
