Transformative Institutional Change
This study analyses the diversification of the South Korean legal field following institutional changes. South Korean reforms to legal education and legal practice between 2007 and 2011, specifically the 2007 Act on the Establishment and Management of Professional Law Schools and the 2011 Attorney-at-Law Act amendments, expanded the pool of new attorneys and increased the number of law firms. The government increased the supply of lawyers by refo…

The History of Communication Studies across the Americas
This special section investigates the history of communication and media studies across national and linguistic contexts in the Americas. It maps transnational entanglements that have shaped communication inquiry in the multiple forms it has taken in South and North America and the Caribbean. At the same time, the section’s articles attend to political, institutional, and cultural dynamics that shaped the field in different national and local con…
Introduction of Post-Ecological Poetry
This paper explores contemporary Korean poetry through two distinct ecological perspectives. First, it reflects on the anthropocentrism inherent in conventional ecological poetry. Second, it investigates the potential for a post-ecological poetry that transcends this anthropocentrism. Traditional nature poetry aims to address ecological concerns but often relies on an anthropocentric perspective shaped by human-centered views. This tendency reduc…

The history of communication studies across the Americas
Exclusions/Exclusiones
In this introduction for the special section on "Exclusions in the History of Media Studies," we begin by calling attention to the constituting role that exclusion has played in the historiography of media studies.Exclusions linked to gender, race, language, colonialism, geopolitical location, and institutionally sanctioned privilege play substantial roles in shaping formal and informal accounts of our fields' pasts. The project of reversal and re…
A History of Media Effects Research Traditions
In this chapter the authors briefly describe the historic development of research on media effects by highlighting various theories of media effects and categorizing them according to their underlying epistemologies. They start with the question as to what communication originally meant across academia and point to the most important historical phases in communication research. They conclude with a discussion of whether media effects still exist …
The field of communication’s uptake of computers, networks, and the internet
Our goal in this article is to understand the historical sequences as well as consequences of the internet on the development of the academic field of communication. As a field that has one foot in the study of a most basic and necessary human activity, and another foot in the study of innovative technology, has scholarship in the field of communication followed internet developments? Is there a lag between technological developments and communic…
Introduction to Media History and Democracy
This thematic issue of Media and Communication features articles that address the workings of democracy as understood through the lens of media history. The intersection of democracy and media history brings together two impossibly expansive terms, so expansive that the articles herein cannot provide any meaningful closure to the questions that even a cursory consideration of media history and democracy would provoke. Instead of closure, what the…
Study of Time III
Networks of the dead or alive in cyberspace
This article addresses whether dead public intellectuals differ from living public intellectuals in terms of their social network properties in the mass and internet media. Explicated at the theoretical level is the macro-level asynchrony of the web, moving beyond micro-level conceptualizations. Networks for 662 actors which Posner defined as public intellectuals are analyzed based on data from Nexis for magazines, newspapers and broadcast media,…
Public intellectuals and the media
A continuing debate regarding public intellectuals consistently involves a narrative of decline. This declinist position rests on an assumption that the media are central to the public intellectual role, though the declinists focus strictly on institutional explanations, to the neglect of the role played by the media. This paper explains how the application of media theory to this debate will give us a better understanding of the public intellect…

Strategic self-marginalization
Marginality is an important concept in the history of science, though it is often used in a manner that presumes marginality to be a static designation. We contend that the dynamics of marginality are crucial to the history of psychoanalysis, a discipline that has moved between dominant and marginal positions. We address psychoanalytic marginality via three specific "cases": the marginalization among Freud and his followers when psychoanalysis wa…
Estimates of aging and secular changes using total arm length
Stature, total arm length, and subischial length were studied in a cross‐sectional sample of 387 working (career women) and 460 nonworking women (housewives), 20–75 years of age, from one endogamous group, the Khatris. Statural decrease due to aging was separated from secular effects by using total arm length, which was least affected by aging. The rate of loss in stature due to aging was 0.142 cm/year in the working women and 0.140 cm/year in th…
Interpersonal Effects in Computer-Mediated Interaction
This study examined the effects of time restriction on social interaction in computer-mediated communication through a meta-analysis of applicable research. Time was defined as whether subjects were restricted or unrestricted in their opportunity to exchange messages. Studies were included that assessed either of two outcome variables: socially oriented (as opposed to task-oriented) communication, and negative / uninhibited communication. Hypothe…
