A dark picture by Garry Winogrand from 1964 has been on my mind for nearly twenty years. It puts us in the driver's seat on a road in Utah looking through a bugsmeared windshield. On the silver highway ahead, cars coming from the opposite direction seem to have stopped, but who can tell why exactly in the dim light, except that something compelling right in front of us crosses the road.
