The hoard of gold torcs from Ipswich comprises five found in 1968, to which must be added a sixth found on 18 October 1970. The five found in 1968 were in immediate association with each other and are here numbered 1 to 5. The 1970 find, my number 6, may be accepted as from the same hoard but separated from the others during the course of earth-moving in the area concerned. All the torcs are outstanding examples of early Celtic craftsmanship, and…

  • Early Iron Age ‘C’ in Wessex

    Open Access•J W Brailsford, John Brailsford•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•1958•Cited by: 1•References: 1

The Early Iron Age of Wessex has been the study of many distinguished archaeologists, and any fresh investigation is bound to be in large part either a synthesis or a development of the results of earlier workers. Among the latter must be included not only such notable scholars as General Pitt-Rivers, the Cunningtons, Professor Hawkes, Sir Mortimer Wheeler and Mr Radford, but a multitude of professional archaeologists and amateurs, whose accumula…

  • Excavations at Little Woodbury

    Open Access•J W Brailsford, John Brailsford•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•1949•Cited by: 1

While examining the pottery from Little Woodbury in 1939–40, Professor Hawkes observed that the critical pottery from the lower filling of the Ditch ‘DA’ was so sparse as to be useless for comparative purposes. On his suggestion, the Council of the Prehistoric Society decided that a substantial section of the Ditch should be cleared for the purpose of obtaining additional material from the primary filling, and in the spring of 1947 it became poss…

The excavations of the Iron Age site at Little Woodbury were carried out by the Prehistoric Society in 1938–39 under the direction of Dr Gerhard Bersu. The first part of the report, published in Proc. Prehist. Soc. VI (1940), 30–111, was Dr Bersu's account of the structures revealed by excavation. This second part deals with the pottery, by far the most abundant material recovered, and discusses its significance for the history of the site and it…

  • Bronze Age Stone Monuments of Dartmoor

    Open Access•J W Brailsford•ARTICLE•Antiquity•1938

The lofty expanse of heather, bog and bare granite which forms the region under discussion in this paper, contains a numerous and in many ways unique group of prehistoric antiquities. Although Devonshire archaeologists have for many years been doing good work in this district, it has never, to the best of my knowledge, been comprehensively dealt with in the light of modern methods and experience. Consequently, the prehistory of Dartmoor still pre…
