Bridging global goals with local realities
Universities are where global promises meet local problems. This study examines how Pakistan's higher education sector is aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across four domains—learning and teaching, research, governance and external leadership—based on responses from 41 of 247 universities. We find energetic activity in SDG—related teaching and research, but slower movement on institutional governance and outward leadership. …
Migration Governance in Pakistan
Recent estimations indicate that Pakistan is currently host to approximately 3.28 million migrants, comprising roughly 1.5 percent of the nation's total population. While Pakistan possesses an extensive national registration database, the National Database and Registration Authority, encompassing both citizens and individuals of Pakistani origin, it is noteworthy that the country lacks a comprehensive migration-sensitive infrastructure. Consequen…
From theory to practice
This practical note explores the impact of transformative learning through an international design competition focused on net-zero housing in South Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, and sub-Saharan Africa. By fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and hands-on engagement, the competition equipped young professionals with practical skills to address climate-responsive housing challenges. Participants designed affordable, sustainable homes…

Human Capital and Foreign Remittances in Pakistan
This study analyzes the effects of foreign remittance on human capital by using the pooled data collected from HIES data sets, from 1998/99 to 2018/19. Two proxies (e.g., 1- mean years-of-schooling with age equal to 15 years and above, 2- mean years-of-schooling with age equal to 25 and above) are used for human capital. The panel data techniques, like Fixed effect,Random effect model, GLS regression, and Panel corrected standard error regression…
Does Dowry Drive Labor Export? Evidence from Pakistan
In Pakistan, one household in six receives remittances from family members working elsewhere. Using household data from a national living standards survey, we find that propensity to receive remittances is strongly associated with a higher number of dependent girls relative to total children in a household. The effect is significant for younger households and for households with lower permanent income, and increases as girls approach expected mar…
Do health infrastructure and services, aging, and environmental quality influence public health expenditures? Empirical evidence from Pakistan
Rapidly growing health expenditure is a matter of grave concern for households and governments. Every government is compelled to allocate a sufficient budget to improve people's health. This study, therefore, identifies some major factors that influence the trajectory of public health care expenditure (HCE) in Pakistan for the period 1974-2017. The ARDL-bounds test and Bayer-Hanck cointegration test consistently reveal that HCE and its specified …
Role of Education, Age, and Family Size on Food Insecurity in Pakistan
Female Earnings in the Apparel Industry Post-MFA
One of the major worries vis-à-vis the phasing out of the multifiber arrangements (MFA)/agreement on textile and clothing (ATC) in 2005 was that the textile and apparel (T&A) production would shift from the developed to the developing countries and have significant impacts on particularly the female workers, as apparel is a female intensive sector in the world. We explore the effect of MFA/ATC on female laborer by examining the predictions of the…
Why lessons learnt are lost
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to reduce the gap in understanding the complexity of barriers, their modifiers and how these barriers and their modifiers result in malpractices and missed good practices in post-earthquake reconstruction contexts. This paper provides insights to the often asked question: why the lessons learnt from one earthquake event are not actually learnt and many of the mistakes around housing reconstruction are repeated…
Reproductive health services
Access to reproductive health services and products in remote and rural communities is a critical area of concern for developing countries. This article considers a pilot intervention in three districts of Pakistan where “Business-in-a-Box” as a model of place-based social innovation is used to improve the socio-economic conditions of women in remote rural settings through socially responsible micro-franchising. It finds that such programmes help…
Globalization and Working Environment Nexus
This study investigates the impact of globalization (defined as phasing-out of the multifiber arrangements [MFA]/agreement on textile and clothing [ATC]) on working conditions of textile and apparel workers in general and female workers in particular in Pakistan. We found that the impact of the elimination of the MFA/ATC on workers of the textile and apparel sector is negative and statistically insignificant. The working conditions of workers in …
Challenges of research in rural poverty
This practical note highlights lessons learnt during the data collection of two large field surveys as part of the ongoing “Sindh Union Council and Economic Strengthening Support” (SUCCESS) programme in southern Pakistan. The experience is discussed in terms of language barriers, the educational status of households, dealing with people’s expectations and non-cooperation, and the weather conditions. The note also highlights the practice of public…
