  • Z czego się śmieje wiersz Różewicza

    Open Access•Piotr Michalowski•ARTICLE•Wielogłos•2022

What is Różewicz Laughing about? An overview of motifs appearing in Tadeusz Różewicz’s poetry such as these of “jester” and “clownery,” “smile,” “laughter” and “mockery” serves as a background for the title reflection, in which the questions of affirmation of someone else’s joy of life; acceptance for ludic laughter; therapeutic role of laughter in face of war trauma; and satirical distance from the observed events come to the forefront. In Różew…

  • Ancient Near Eastern and European Isolates

    Piotr Michalowski•CHAPTER•Language Isolates•2017

Information on many ancient languages has been preserved in hundreds of thousands of cuneiform documents recovered from the remains of Near Eastern habitations, spanning a time frame from ca. 3300 bce to at least the first century ce. The quantity and quality of this information varies: some languages are documented by vast amounts of literary, scholarly and administrative texts, some are known only from personal names, and still others merely by…

It is possib…

  • Literacy in the ancient Near East

    Open Access•Piotr Michalowski•CHAPTER•The Encyclopedia of Ancient History•2015

Writing and literacy are often associated with the rise of highly complex societies and the state and as such are generally considered to be a hallmark of ancient Near Eastern societies. While such correlations are indisputable, there is little agreement on matters of causality, process, and function, or on the status of literacy in ancient polities. In the ancient Near East literacy was always restricted, and its scope and power were in constant…

    Open Access•Piotr Michalowski•CHAPTER•The Encyclopedia of Ancient History•2012

Mesopotamian king lists (KL) exhibit a variety of formats, but their close relationship to texts that have been labeled as “chronicles” makes it difficult to define them as a completely independent form; they have been analyzed together as “chronographic texts”.

  • Strategie skandalu i stereotypy odbioru

    Open Access•Piotr Michalowski•ARTICLE•Przestrzenie Teorii•2007

The terms used in this title are connected - as two opposite kinds of reaction to the text and they exist outside: in conciousness of author and reader. Stereotype is necessary to hold intercourse; scandal is the effect of disturbance in communication but sometimes there is inversely: the communication bases on expectation of scandal - as particular convention. Scandal is a subjective phenomenon; it isn't an event, but it is a kind of response: p…

  • Iddin-Dagan and his Family

    Piotr Michalowski•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Assyriologie und…•2005

The fragmentary nature of cuneiform documentation provides a generous canvas for historical speculation; indeed, without such speculation our reconstruction of the ancient past would be dry, disjointed, and chaotically discontinuous. But speculation carries risks, and new information more often than not wreaks havoc on even the most carefully woven historical narratives. In a recent paper I suggested that the royal houses of Mari and Ur were stro…

During the last two decades he has expanded his interests to include a wide variety of cultures and has widened his theoretical vision under the influence of the structuralism of Claude Levi-Strauss. Having studied the Old Testament in a lively and con…
