  • Morphomap

    Open Access•Profico Antonio, L Bondioli et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2021•Cited by: 10•References: 72

OBJECTIVES: This study describes and demonstrates the functionalities and application of a new R package, morphomap, designed to extract shape information as semilandmarks in multiple sections, build cortical thickness maps, and calculate biomechanical parameters on long bones. METHODS: morphomap creates, from a single input (an oriented 3D mesh representing the long bone surface), multiple evenly spaced virtual sections. morphomap then directly …

  • Assessing the reliability of virtual reconstruction of mandibles

    Open Access•Ricardo Miguel Godinho, Paul O''Higgin et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 42

OBJECTIVES: Mandibular morphological variation is often used to examine various aspects of human palaeobiology. However, fossil and archeological skeletal remains are often fragmented/distorted and so are frequently excluded from studies. This leads to decreased sample sizes and, potentially, to biased results. Thus, it is of interest to restore the original anatomy of incomplete/distorted specimens. Thin plate splines (TPS), commonly used in Geo…

  • Three‐dimensional analysis of sexual dimorphism in ribcage kinematics of modern humans

    Open Access•Daniel García‐martínez, M Bastir et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2019•Cited by: 6•References: 66

OBJECTIVES: Sexual dimorphism is an important biological factor underlying morphological variation in the human skeleton. Previous research found sex-related differences in the static ribcage, with males having more horizontally oriented ribs and a wider lower ribcage than females. Furthermore, a recent study found sex-related differences in the kinematics of the human lungs, with cranio-caudal movements of the caudal part of the lungs accounting…

    Open Access•Andrej A Evteev, Andrej Evteev et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2014•Cited by: 32•References: 66

Previous studies have examined mid‐facial cold adaptation among either widely dispersed and genetically very diverse groups of humans isolated for tens of thousands of years, or among very closely related groups spread over climatically different regions. Here we present a study of one East Asian and seven North Asian populations in which we examine the evidence for convergent adaptations of the mid‐face to a very cold climate. Our findings indic…

    Open Access•T F G Higham, Tom Higham et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2011

  • Why do humans have chins? Testing the mechanical significance of modern human symphyseal morphology with finite element analysis

Open Access•Flora Gröning, Jia Liu et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2011•Cited by: 11•References: 59

The modern human mandibular symphysis differs from those of all other primates in being vertically orientated and possessing a chin, but the functional significance of this unique morphology is not well understood. Some hypotheses propose that it is an adaptation to specific loads occurring during masticatory function. This study uses finite element analysis to examine these symphyseal loads in a model of a modern human mandible. By modifying the…

    Open Access•Kornelius Kupczik, Catherine A Dobson et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2009•Cited by: 13•References: 68

Research on the evolution and adaptive significance of primate craniofacial morphologies has focused on adult, fully developed individuals. Here, we investigate the possible relationship between the local stress environment arising from masticatory loadings and the emergence of the supraorbital torus in the developing face of the crab‐eating macaque Macaca fascicularis . By using finite element analysis (FEA), we are able to evaluate the hypothes…

    Open Access•Cobb, Samuel N Cobb et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2007•Cited by: 19

  • A geometric morphometric study of regional differences in the ontogeny of the modern human facial skeleton†

Open Access•Una Strand Viðarsdóttir, Paul O''Higgin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Anatomy•2002

This study examines interpopulation variations in the facial skeleton of 10 modern human populations and places these in an ontogenetic perspective. It aims to establish the extent to which the distinctive features of adult representatives of these populations are present in the early post natal period and to what extent population differences in ontogenetic scaling and allometric trajectories contribute to distinct facial forms. The analyses uti…

  • The study of morphological variation in the hominid fossil record

    Open Access•Paul O''Higgin, Paul O'Higgins•ARTICLE•Journal of Anatomy•2000

This review considers some recent advances in shape analysis based on landmark data, and focuses on the application of these methods to the study of skeletal evolution in primates. These advances have provoked some controversy. The major aims of this review are to put these debates in context and to provide an overview for the nonmathematician. The purpose of morphometric studies is considered, together with issues relating to the nature, signifi…

  • Facial growth in Cercocebus torquatus

    Open Access•Paul O''Higgin, Paul O'Higgins et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Anatomy•1998

This paper presents a study of 3‐dimensional growth in the facial skeleton of the mangabey, Cercocebus torquatus . The pattern of facial cortical remodelling in this species is already well mapped from an earlier study. In this paper we consider the extent to which these remodelling maps relate to ontogenetic changes in size and shape of the face. This study is based on 31 facial landmarks taken from 49 adult and subadult faces. Our analysis draw…

In this paper we review the basic mechanisms underlying the post‐natal growth of the cranium and consider two recent advances in methodology which offer the prospect of improving our ability to study growth changes in the skull. Recent advances in techniques for the study of craniofacial remodelling are combined with a numerical approach to the study of shape changes, the thin plate spline, in order to examine the correspondence between the spati…
