Protests in Germany 2000–2020. A dataset based on local protest event data in Bremen, Dresden, Leipzig, and Stuttgart
In exploring protest dynamics, Protest Event Analysis (PEA) has proven an indispensable analytical tool. Most existing PEA datasets, however, rely on national newspapers. This article introduces a local PEA dataset ProLoc based on local newspapers in four German cities (2000-2020). We show how this dataset with its 8,190 events allows a more detailed look into trends in protest mobilisation than the national perspective. In particular, we show is…
The Media Agenda‐Setting Role of Protests in Nondemocratic Regimes: A Case Study From Hungary
This study investigates how protests influence media coverage in a nondemocratic context, focusing on the 2022–2023 education‐related protest wave in Hungary. Drawing on data from the Hungarian Protest Event Database (HuPED) and a corpus of 24,029 education‐related articles across 47 online news portals, we examine how different types of media—classified by political alignment and geographic scope—respond to protest activity. Using panel regressi…
Protest types and protester profiles: Testing meso−micro-associations between event characteristics and participant attitudes
When Topics of Protest and Counter-Protest Diverge: Asymmetrical Issue Contestation in Left-Right Street Confrontations
Works on protest counter-protest dynamics tend to assume that protesters and counter-protesters make competing claims about the same issue. This paper challenges this basic assumption. Based on an original dataset on local protests in Germany, it demonstrates that events that trigger a counter-protest and the response event, that is, the counter-protest, differ significantly in the issues they address. While a range of issues elicit counter-prote…
Local protest event analysis: Providing a More Comprehensive Picture
In exploring protest dynamics, Protest Event Analysis (PEA) has proven an indispensable analytic tool. Despite various improvements, PEA faces continuous challenges, notably the reproduction of media-specific selection biases. This research note aims to contribute to the literature seeking to mitigate these issues by exploring the potential of PEA based on local newspaper data, which tend to be less selective in their protest reporting. The artic…
Papea: A modular pipeline for the automation of protest event analysis
Protest event analysis (PEA) is the core method to understand spatial patterns and temporal dynamics of protest. We show how Large Language Models (LLM) can be used to automate the classification of protest events and of political event data more broadly with levels of accuracy comparable to humans, while reducing necessary annotation time by several orders of magnitude. We propose a modular pipeline for the automation of PEA (PAPEA) based on fin…
Resisting the Far-Right: Explaining Divergent Countermobilization Trajectories in Two German Cities
This article explains the divergent trajectories of anti-far-right mobilization in two German cities: the campaign against the extreme-right movement Pegida in Dresden and its offshoot, Legida, in Leipzig. Drawing on a comparative case study, we argue that the interplay of three city-specific features—namely, activist coalitions, the city’s political identity, and elite support—account for the strength and cohesion of the countermobilization in L…
Counter-Protests With and Without Counter-Movements
Protest-counter-protest (P-CP) interactions are still underresearched in social movement studies. Usually, they are subsumed under movement-counter-movement (M-CM) interaction. We argue that this covers only one part of the empirical phenomenon because not all counter-protests are tied to a counter-movement. We suggest differentiating between closely coupled and uncoupled counter-protest and introduce a conceptual framework for this. While the li…
Introduction: How Protests and Counterprotests Interact-Mutual Influences, Context Conditions, and Consequences
Counterprotests have become commonplace around the world today in various issue areas, ranging from abortion, migration, and LGBTQ+ rights to disarmament, labor, and climate change. And yet, our knowledge about the relationship between protests and counterprotests remains limited-especially with respect to concrete interactions between them in situ . This introduction outlines how the articles in the special issue contribute to a better understan…
Taking to the Streets in Germany – Disenchanted and Confident Critics in Mass Demonstrations
This paper analyses the socio-demographic attributes and political attitudes of protesters in Germany. In doing so, the paper studies participation at demonstrations, one of the key forms of non-electoral political participation in Germany and a central political arena in which to negotiate political and cultural conflicts. Methodologically, we draw on original data from nine protest surveys collected between 2003 and 2020. The demonstrations und…
The politics of alliances. The making and breaking of social movement coalitions. Introduction to the special issue
This special issue will focus on processes and mechanisms of the making and unmaking of alliances among different grassroots, civil society, and social movement organizations. The formation of alliances is a key principle and basic mechanism of mobilization and the emergence of social movements. When focusing on why and how alliances emerge, social movement scholars tend to neglect that the making and breaking of coalitions is embedded in and int…
Multimodal mechanisms of political discourse dynamics and the case of Germany’s nuclear energy phase-out
The 2011 policy pivot of the German government, from extending nuclear power plants terms to securing their shutdown for 2022, cannot be explained without looking at how the German political discourse network shifted in the months following Fukushima. This paper seeks to model and identify mechanisms that help explain how the two-mode network of political actors’ support for claims developed. We identify possible mechanisms to explain discourse d…

Integrating Manual and Automatic Annotation for the Creation of Discourse Network Data Sets
This article investigates the integration of machine learning in the political claim annotation workflow with the goal to partially automate the annotation and analysis of large text corpora. It introduces the MARDY annotation environment and presents results from an experiment in which the annotation quality of annotators with and without machine learning based annotation support is compared. The design and setting aim to measure and evaluate: a…
Cooperation in networks: Political parties and interest groups in EU policy-making in Germany
Political actors cooperate with each other to share resources and to organize political support. In this article, we describe and explain such cooperative behavior in European Union policy-making by analyzing the information networks that parliamentarians of the Bundestag entertain with other party politicians and with interest groups. First, we describe whom parliamentarians cooperate with to receive policy information. Subsequently, we identify…

Competing coalitions: The politics of renewable energy and fossil fuels in Mexico, South Africa and Thailand
This paper analyses why middle-income countries incentivize renewable energy despite inexpensive domestic fossil fuel resources and lack of international support. We examine the politics of renewable energy programs in Mexico, South Africa and Thailand. All three countries hold abundant local fossil fuel and renewable energy resources. \nWe argue that renewable energy programs become implementable policy options in fossil fuel resource-rich middl…

Political discourse networks and the conflict over software patents in Europe
In 2005, the European Parliament rejected the directive ‘on the patentability of computer‐implemented inventions’, which had been drafted and supported by the European Commission, the Council and well‐organised industrial interests, with an overwhelming majority. In this unusual case, a coalition of opponents of software patents prevailed over a strong industry‐led coalition. In this article, an explanation is developed based on political discour…

Conflicts about intellectual property claims: The Role and Function of Collective Action Networks
Decision-making processes in Europe involve complex networks of actors who are trying to influence them at the various levels of the European multi-level governance system. Interest group research often assumes that the ability of an actor to exert influence depends mainly on its financial and personal resourcefulness, on its ability to provide expert knowledge and on its economic and/or political power. Recent conflicts in which ‘weak’ actors we…
