In 1230 Matilda de Bernham claimed she had found Edward, son of Master Benedict, a Norwich physician, lamenting and saying that he was a Jew. Moreover, she accused the city's Jews of trying to retrieve the boy by force, calling him “their Jew.” Four years later, Master Benedict, who had not actively searched for Edward, accused the Jews of circumcising him. There followed both legal proceedings and attacks on Norwich Jews and their property. Some…

  • Nicholas of Cusa and the Ottoman Threat to Christendom

    Thomas M Izbicki, Nathan Ron•ARTICLE•Medieval Encounters•2022

Nicholas of Cusa (1401–1464) had a long-time interest in the possibility of dialog with muslims. When the Ottomans captured Constantinople in 1453, he authored a vision of religious peace in De pace fidei . By the time Pope Pius II called for a crusade against the Turks, Nicholas provided him with a critique of the Qurʾān. The changed viewpoint combined polemic with an effort to find Christian truths in the Islamic sacred text. This article trace…

  • Conciliarism, Humanism and Law: Justifications of Authority and Power, c.1400–c.1520, by Joseph Canning

    Open Access•Thomas M Izbicki•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2022

This book is a sequel to Joseph Canning’s Ideas of Power in the Late Middle Ages, 1296–1417 (2011; rev. ante, cxxvii [2012], pp. 1,488–9). The focus here is on questions of the legitimacy of power and authority. The most creative approaches to these questions in the fifteenth century are found in conciliarism and its papalist response, humanism, and law, especially Roman law as found in the systematising work of the Commentators and the more hist…

  • S tefan B auer . The Invention of Papal History: Onofrio Panvinio between Renaissance and Catholic Reform

    Open Access•Thomas M Izbicki•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2022

The division of ecclesiastical history along confessional lines is most easily identified with the Protestant Magdeburg Centuries (1559–74) and the Roman Catholic response, spearheaded by Cardinal Caesar Baronius. But a great deal of work already had been done on the Catholic side by Onofrio Panvinio (d. 1568). That Augustinian savant has been best known for his research on Roman history. Stefan Bauer’s The Invention of Papal History: Onofrio Pan…

    Thomas M Izbicki, Thomas Izbicki•ARTICLE•Renaissance and Reformation•2019

The Dominican theologian Francisco de Vitoria, founder of the School of Salamanca, was cautiously positive about general councils as useful to the church. However, he was not supportive of the strong conciliarism of the University of Paris. Vitoria’s successor at Salamanca, Melchor Cano, was much more a papalist, an opinion partially shared by Bartolomé Carranza, who attended the opening sessions of the Council of Trent (1545–63) and became archb…

In 1506, the vicar general of the diocese of Lucca authorized a notarized dossier of texts, most of them papal, favoring the observant house of the Augustinian Hermits in that city. Some of these texts had themselves been notarized to make them useful in litigation. Along with the papal letters, there are previously unknown letters of Enrico del Carretto, bishop of Lucca (d. 1323), and Alexander de S, Elpidio, a prior general of the Hermits. The …

Written by a Dominican friar in the thirteenth century, it treated cases of conscience in a systematic manner. It also examined matrimony and the other sacraments. The Summa was subject to detailed commentary by William of Rennes, updates by John of Fr…

  • The Eucharist in Medieval Canon Law

    Open Access•Thomas M Izbicki•BOOK•Eucharist in Medieval Canon Law•2015

Thomas Izbicki presents a new examination of the relationship between the adoration of the sacrament and canon law from the twelfth to fifteenth centuries. The medieval Church believed Christ's glorified body was present in the Eucharist, the most central of the seven sacraments, and the Real Presence became explained as transubstantiation by university-trained theologians. Expressions of this belief included the drama of the elevated host and ch…

  • An Argument from Authority in the Indies Debate

    Open Access•Thomas M Izbicki•ARTICLE•The Americas A Quarterly Review…•1978•References: 8

At his trial Socrates described himself as attached to Athens “as a gadfly to a horse.” In Sixteenth Century Spain the Order of Preachers played a similar role. Dominican friars freely criticized royal officials, conquistadors and fellow churchmen. At times their meddling in affairs of state drew down on them the wrath of the authorities. Charles V, though favorably disposed toward the Indians, more than once angrily rebuked their defenders, the …

The counciliar policy of francis ist oscillated between that of collaboration and that of obstruction. The council was never just a secondary issue, even if the kind hoped to achieve around him a religious concord by means of an assembly of …
