Correlated factors with filial piety expectations of older Koreans and Korean-Americans
Changing filial piety expectations have been examined from the viewpoint of younger generations. However, research on older adults’ perspective of this cultural phenomenon is virtually absent from the empirical literature. In an effort to address the changing family life circumstances of Korean and Korean-American families, this study explores older adults’ filial expectations from their own children and correlated factors associated with the exp…
When Public Tragedies Happen
Although an expansive literature exists on individual experiences after a catastrophic event, there is less attention to how the community as a social structure experiences a significant tragedy. These public tragedies create disruptions across multiple domains of community functioning. Using the Community Capacity Model (Hart, 1999) as a framework for assessment, outcomes of a public tragedy are described. Additionally, community practice approa…
The Capacity Evaluation Screen-Social Work (CES-SW)
This study aimed to develop and validate an assessment tool for social workers to screen whether an individual is able to provide consent for involvement in social work programs. The Capacity Evaluation Screen-Social Work (CES-SW) was developed to be a valid and reliable instrument for brief administration. Theoretically, the CES-SW includes four domains of consent: evidencing a choice, understanding, reasoning, and appreciation. Data were obtain…
Social Work and Restorative Justice
Restorative justice and social work share principles and goals, including the goal of addressing pain and conflict. Many of the processes used by restorative justice practitioners are based on indigenous practices that facilitate peacemaking, victim healing, and reengagement of offenders. As a method for transforming conflict, restorative justice can be viewed as a theory, a principle, and a practice. Each aspect of restorative justice has the ab…
Neighborhood Disadvantage and Refusal of Formal Services Among Cases Reported to Adult Protection Services
Research suggests that certain factors influence the way caregivers of older adults experience the role of caretaker. Aspects of the caregiving experience that have been considered include factors influencing decisions to seek services, causes of caregiver burden, and the relationship between caregiver burden and maltreatment. Most of this research has focused on characteristics of caregivers and how these individual characteristics influence the…
Sexual Harassment Experiences and Their Psychological Correlates Among a Diverse Sample of College Women
This study explored the relationship between sexual victimization and psychological outcomes in two samples of a total of 410 college women in two southern states, as well as racial differences in the prevalence of and responses to sexual harassment experiences. It found an alarmingly high rate of sexual victimization among both the Black and the White students. Internalized shame was a useful construct for understanding the relationship between …
Kinship Care in Rural Georgia Communities
In 2005, the Georgia Division of Aging Services initiated the Kinship Care Program to provide services to grandparents raising grandchildren throughout Georgia's 12 regional Area Agencies on Aging. Many of the grandparents who receive Division of Aging Services services reside in rural communities. To assess the impact of the program among rural grandparents and learn more about their needs, an evaluation study was conducted with 30 grandparents …
Chapter 16. Community Caregiving Partnerships in Aging
Although greater numbers of families are providing support to older adults, a lack of comprehensive programming in resource allocation continues to exist at the social policy level. This chapter explores how community caregiving partnerships may contribute to a solution
Second Generation Parenting
A review of the scholarly literature indicates that the number of grandparents who are second generation parents (e.g., raising their grandchildren) has increased dramatically. These grandparents often return to parenting with a variety of financial and physical health issues that need to be addressed within the context of their caregiving role. The current study is a secondary data analysis of a sample of grandparent caregivers that received TAN…
The Future of Social Work in Aging
With the aging of the baby boom generation, the number of older adults in the US will increase substantially. Research, education, and policy perspectives that will advance social work knowledge, skills and resources in aging are proposed. Social work as a profession is chall…
Evidenced-Based Treatment for Older Adults
Over the past several decades, the number of older adults has grown at an unprecedented rate. As the number of older adults continues to increase with the aging of the baby boom generation, it is essential that social workers have knowledge of effective strategies for promoting quality of life and treating later-life mental health disorders among older adults and their family members. In order to promote such knowledge, this article reviews the o…
Pathways into Caregiving for Rural Custodial Grandparents
Although one-quarter (25%) of custodial grandparents live in rural areas, less is known about these families than their urban counterparts. This qualitative study was conducted to determine pathways into care with rural families; that is, the reasons and process into custodial grandparenting roles. Based upon interviews with fourteen grandparents, three major pathways were identified. The most common was co-residential where the parent generation…

Service Learning as a Transition into Foundation Field
Service learning is a pedagogical method to bridge classroom and community experiences for students. Although social work education has historically emphasized this connection through internship experiences, service learning can fill a different function within the curriculum. This article proposes a service learning experience to assist graduate students with the transition into their foundation field placement. Beneficial outcomes of using serv…
Grandparents Raising Grandchildren
Estimates suggest that there may be over one million children in the United States who are being raised solely by their grandparents. Research in the area of grandparents raising grandchildren in homes where the parents are absent is still sparse, but researchers are beginning to see the importance of understanding these family forms, reasons for increasing numbers, and problems that are experienced by both the grandparents and grandchildren. In …
Knowledge of and Attitudes Toward Aging Among Non-Elders
Although the aging process begins at birth, fears about late adulthood can foster anxiety in younger cohorts about this time of life. This study examines the relationship between non-elderly subjects' (n = 884, 18-55 years) knowledge of and anxieties regarding personal aging and their gender and race. We hypothesized that non-elderly women and persons of color, those who will experience multiple jeopardy in their own late life, would report great…

Training Public Assistance Workers in Policy and Interpersonal Helping Skills
Although social work has traditionally been concerned with economically disadvantaged populations, separation of income maintenance and public social services functions in the 1970s resulted in a decrease in social work influence and involvement in public assistance programs. In an effort to incorporate certain social work principles and practices into the public assistance function, a school of social work and a state agency collaborated to deve…
