Health professionals interface with cultural conflict in the delivery of type 2 diabetes care
OBJECTIVE: This study explored the knowledge and experiences of health professionals (HPs) caring for South Asian patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). DESIGN: Fourteen HPs, who supported patients with T2D, were interviewed. The recruitment strategy employed purposeful and theoretical sampling methods to recruit HPs who worked across primary and secondary care settings. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Grounded Theory (GT) methodology and analysis generated…
Evaluating the role and effectiveness of co‐produced community‐based mental health interventions that aim to reduce suicide among adults
The effect of pain on reference memory for duration
Previous research has consistently reported that pain related stimuli are perceived as lasting longer than non-pain related ones, suggesting that pain lengthens subjective time. However, to date, the investigation has been limited to the immediate effects of pain on time perception. The current study aims to investigate whether pain affects how a duration is recalled after a period of delay. In two experiments, participants were asked to complete…

Individual Differences and Similarities in the Judgement of Facial Pain
Accurate assessment of pain by health-care professionals is essential to ensure optimal management of pain. An under-researched area is whether personality characteristics affect perception of pain in others. The aims were (a) to determine whether individual differences are associated with participants’ ability to assess pain, and (b) to determine facial cues used in the assessment of pain. One hundred and twenty-eight undergraduate students part…
An Ethnographic Study of Palliative and End-of-Life Care in a Nigerian Hospital
Most clinicians receive little or no palliative care (PC) education. Similarly, patients and their families receive little or no information on PC. Our study explored education in PC, while examining for its impacts on service delivery and utilization from the perspective of health care professionals (HCPs), patients, and their families. An ethnographic approach was utilized to gather data from 41 participants. Spradley’s ethnographic analytical …
The relationship between pain-induced autonomic arousal and perceived duration
Emotional distortions of the perceived duration of events are often explained in terms of increases and decreases in arousal. While this explanation is theoretically plausible, there is a lack of evidence for a direct relationship between physiological arousal and perceived duration. The aim of the current study was to investigate whether physiological arousal, defined by autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity is directly related to perceived du…
Keeping in Touch
Use of technology in health care has risen exponentially in recent years alongside the increased demand for healthcare services. In a climate of rising healthcare costs innovations in the use of technology may provide a cost effective means of interacting with clients. Programmes such as Skype enable sound and video calls between devices. Remote live interactions using Skype could improve the quality of care by increasing the level of accessibili…
A cognitive-perceptual model of symptom perception in males and females
Kolk et al.'s model of symptom perception underlines the effects of trait negative affect, selective attention and external stressors. The current study tested this model in 263 males and 498 females from an occupational sample. Trait negative affect was associated with symptom reporting in females only, and selective attention and psychological job demands were associated with symptom reporting in both genders. Health anxiety was associated with…
