  • Managing recruitment, risk, and reintegration: Ethiopian domestic workers and the migration industry

Open Access•Ninna Nyberg Sørensen, Meron Zeleke Eresso•ARTICLE•Ethnic and Racial Studies•2026

Over the past 30 years, an increasing number of young Ethiopian women have migrated to the Arab Gulf States. Their precarious working conditions and associated vulnerabilities have received considerable attention, often alongside critiques of the kafala system of temporary migrant labour governance in the region. Less attention has been paid to the sending state's complicity in upholding the system. This article examines the infrastructures and m…

  • More than Maids: Social Mobility Experiences Among Ethiopian Women Migrating to the United Arab Emirates

Open Access•Meron Zeleke Eresso, Ninna Nyberg Sørensen•ARTICLE•Genealogy•2025•References: 9

The migration of Ethiopian women to the Middle East has primarily been studied in connection with domestic labour and the related vulnerabilities. Due to assumptions about the low educational levels of women entering this sector, as well as the precarity and temporality the sector entails, opportunities for social mobility have been largely overlooked. This article examines changes in Ethiopian women’s labour market participation in the United Ar…

  • Introduction to the special section: Unfolding a governance perspective on climate-related mobilities

Open Access•Lily Salloum Lindegaard, Neil Webster et al.•ARTICLE•Climate and Development•2024

Attention to the linkages between climate change and human mobility practices – including immobility – has mounted as climate-related mobility becomes more evident. Research and policy engagement have followed, with increasing recognition of the complexity of climate-related mobility countering simplistic causal models. In this introduction and special section, we seek specifically to highlight the relationship between governance and climate-rela…

  • International migration in Latin America: Critical perspectives on the construction of a field of knowledge

  • The transnational continuum of conditional inclusion: From marginalized immigrants to rejected returnees

Ninna Nyberg Sørensen•ARTICLE•Ethnic and Racial Studies•2022

Research on Dominican migration to the United States ranges from analyses emphasizing incorporation to those exploring diaspora formation and the weaving of transnational ties. Based on a juxtaposition of ethnographic research conducted among Dominican families in New York City in the early 1990s with a recent fieldwork with deported nationals in Santo Domingo, this article approaches conditional inclusion in transnational social space. I examine…

  • Missing Migrants and the Politics of Disappearance in Armed Conflicts and Migratory Contexts

Ninna Nyberg Sørensen, Laura Huttunen•ARTICLE•Ethnos•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 22

In this article we set out to understand the issue of enforced or involuntary disappearance in two seemingly different situations: the missing persons produced by armed conflict and the missing migrants resulting from increasingly rigid migration policies focused on deterrence. Empirical examples from the Guatemalan and Bosnian genocides and from contemporary illegalised migration flows from Guatemala to North America and across the Mediterranean…

  • Governing through the mutilated female body

    Open Access•Ninna Nyberg Sørensen•CHAPTER•Governing the Dead•2020

This chapter examines the brutal killing of women in post-war Guatemala, the interpretations that these murders engender and the place of the dead bodies in the country's contestations over sovereignty. It provides a powerful means of exploring corpses, bodypolitics and contestation in contemporary Guatemala. The chapter suggests that in Guatemala, as in Ciudad Juarez, the mutilated female body has become central to the making and territorialisat…

    Open Access•Ninna Nyberg Sørensen•ARTICLE•Progress in Development Studies•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 5

Mexican development policy is guided by the country’s dual function as both a recipient and a provider of international cooperation. Over the past 17 years, the country has taken several initiatives to promote gender equality nationally, and today gender equality norms cut across Mexican priorities in foreign policy and South-South cooperation activities. Paradoxically, the gains achieved at policy formulating tables have been accompanied by a ri…

  • From Migrant Identity to Migration Industry: The changing conditions of transnational migration

    Open Access•Ninna Nyberg Sørensen•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Migration…•2018•Cited by: 3

In this article, I reflect on changes in the conditions of transnational mobility over the past 25 years. Drawing on continuous engagement with Dominican migrants in sending, transit, destination and return situations, I argue that increasingly strict migration control measures during this period have profoundly altered the existential option of living lives across borders. I specifically address changes in the right to move and settle, the absen…

  • Narrating Identity Across Dominican Worlds 1

    Ninna Nyberg Sørensen•CHAPTER•Transnationalism from Below•2017

This chapter offers key examples of how identity is voiced in contemporary Dominican transnational landscapes, and the gendered forms transnationalism takes. It uses various types of material—ranging from personal migration narratives and "native" novels, written about Dominican experiences from a US-based room with a view, to local commercials, using the view to boost their products. Identity is voiced in a great variety of ways in contemporary …

This chapter examines the sociology of forced migration and how forced migration studies have contributed to sociology. It considers how sociological methods, concepts, and theories have advanced our understanding of the causes, experiences, and impacts of forced migration on micro-, meso-, and macro-levels. In particular, it looks at how sociology has tended to be defined by policy labels and categories, such as refugees, internally displaced pe…

  • Human Rights, Migration, and Social Conflict: Toward a Decolonized Global Justice. By Ariadna Estevez

    Ninna Nyberg Sørensen, N N Sorensen•ARTICLE•Journal of Refugee Studies•2013

The main argument presented in Ariadna Estévez’s critical analysis of the causal relationship between globalization, migration, and social conflict is as follows: since failure to respect the universal human rights of immigrants generates conflict in receiving and transit nations, recognizing human rights would be in the best interest of sending, receiving and transit countries alike. Estévez’s analysis is based on a comparison of certain element…

    Ninna Nyberg Sørensen•ARTICLE•Dansk Sociologi•2005

Ninna Nyberg Sørensen: The Global Family – Disintegration or Transnationalization of the Family? The identification of the family with the domestic group has given rise to various analytical problems in migration research. Many researchers have argued that family separation due to migration leads inevitably to family disintegration. Prediction of such negative outcomes has been conspicuously salient in work dealing with migrant mothers who leave …

Ninna Nyberg Sørensen, Finn Stepputat•ARTICLE•Identities•2001•Cited by: 3•References: 18

Women and men use local experience and experiences gained elsewhere when they embark on migratory projects to reconfigure social space and practices back home. To explore this claim, the authors argue that we must analyze the relationship between mobility and authority, especially how experiences of mobility bestow authority on the moving subjects. This argument is illustrated by an examination of three differently situated narratives from which …

Together with the overall majority of Tetuani inhabitants, these men share a critical view on Spain and Spaniards, simultaneously as their symbolic resistance towards the Moroccan state and the former King Hassan II is expressed by making reference to Spanish ethno- and landscaping.
