On Indexing: The Birth and Early Development of an Idea
Incorporating techniques from book history into traditional intellectual history, this article traces the effective origin of indexing to the early printed editions of two lexicographical works, Lorenzo Valla's Elegantie and Niccolò Perotti's Cornu copiae, and then follows its development through the editions of the Roman poet Virgil published between 1500 and 1800. Indexing practices turn out to be tied to how books were read, with a new way of …
Successes and Failures in Virgilian Translation
This chapter’s discussion of premodern Virgilian translations, those that predate 1850, provides an important historical background to the different directions of Virgilian translations in Europe and beyond. While Kallendorf avoids offering aesthetic judgements on any of these translations, the statistics provided in this chapter shed light on the role that Virgilian translations played in their respective cultures. The most noteworthy part of th…

The Harvard School and the Problem of History
The Harvard School and the Problem of History Craig Kallendorf To start, my title requires a word of explanation. One of the better arguments in favor of the validity of the Harvard School approach is the vigor with which its tenets have been attacked over the last couple of generations. I will leave most aspects of this dispute to others, but I want to confront head-on one of the strongest arguments against the Harvard School perspective: If som…

Printed Books I: Text
Early modern printed books are often said to have stabilized the text of classical authors, but as Chapter 3 shows, this is not true. Early readers of these books, fortunately, have left plenty of marginal notes to show how they read their books. For Latin literature, the reader generally began by marking off short sections of text that were memorable examples in the fields of ethics and style, and by signalling the extract with a brief note in t…
Printed Books II: Illustrations
Chapter 4 brings illustrated editions of Virgil’s poetry into association with the concerns of this book. From the earliest printed books to the end of the twentieth century, a succession of artists provided woodcuts and engravings that ostensibly depicted the world within Virgil’s poetry, but in fact also incorporated elements from the world of the artist. One might think that engravings like these are neutral in terms of ideology, but they are …

The Protean Virgil: Material Form and the Reception of the Classics
This book argues that reception studies should take into account the material form in which a text is transmitted as well as the words that later ages encounter. Using Virgil’s poetry as a case study in book history, this book shows that the succession of material instantiations—manuscript, printed book, illustrated edition, and computer file—undermines the drive towards textual and interpretive stability that is the traditional goal of classical…

Cristoforo Landino's Aeneid and the Humanist Critical Tradition
There is little question that the Virgil criticism of early Italian humanism reached its zenith in the Disputationes Camaldulenses of Cristoforo Landino. Professor of rhetoric and poetry at the Florentine Studium from 1457 to 1497, Landino was active in the circle of philosophers, poets, and scholars associated with Marsilio Ficino and often referred to now as the “Platonic Academy of Florence.” The dialogue, written in 1472 and set a few years e…
Representing the Other: Ercilla's La Araucana, Virgil's Aeneid, and the New World Encounter
Like De Soto and Cortés, the reader of La Araucana also becomes a voyager, by extension one of the conquistadores who spread Spanish imperial power across the New World from Mexico to South America. The author, a courtier to Philip II of Spain, participated himself in the colonial adventures in Peru and Chile, and one approach to the poem has stressed what at one level seems obvious: La Araucana was dedicated to Philip II, the Indians depicted ha…
