Branding the Night: Entrepreneurial City Logics and the Governance of Pedestrian Streets in Hanoi, Vietnam
Cities have increasingly embraced pedestrian streets and the night‐time economy in revitalising their downtown, justified by promises of livability and city branding. However, there remains a notable gap in scholarly work regarding the impacts of these programs on local life. Prior research on Vietnamese streets has concentrated on examining the production and usage of these spaces, often ignoring broader policies and their impacts on the streets…
Behavioral Mapping and Rhythmanalysis: Spatial and Temporal Patterns of Pedestrian Streets in Hanoi
Research on streets and public spaces in general has predominantly relied on systematic observation and behavioral mapping to investigate human behavior and its spatial patterns. This approach, however, often lacks the depth needed, especially in densely populated urban areas of Global South cities, to uncover the intricate social processes and politics that shape people’s behavior and patterns. In response to this limitation, our study takes a m…
Speculative and anticipatory urban futures
In this short comment on Beveridge and Koch's intervention on radical democracy and urbanization, I wish to take their idea of democratic engagement and push it towards epistemological reflections. Democratic engagement is a form of anticipation of urban futures – futures characterized by caring democracy. Adjusting our analytical lens to better see these everyday practices requires rebalancing critical versus generative epistemologies
Rhythmanalysis of pedestrian streets in Hanoi: A spatial–temporal reading of public spaces
Extending gestures and global city-making: Analyzing extending urbanization at multiple scales
The strength of the analysis of extended urbanization proposed in Simone et al.'s (2025) ‘Inhabiting the Extensions’ resides in its fascinating ability to bring together a focus on micro gestures and individual decisions with a structural analysis of global capital flows, geopolitics, and climate change. The collective work of ethnographically diving in nine locations across the world, and bringing together these reflections, generated a rich and…
Reassembling care in pandemic Mexico City
This paper contributes to the debate on the Caring city by analyzing how the local and national states managed the pandemic in Mexico City and the lived and material effects on women. Based on a series of participatory mapping workshops carried out with two groups of women: those who worked from home during the lockdown in 2020–2021 and those forced to seek work outside the home, as well as interviews with civil servants, the paper shows how the …
A French bazaar and a Mexican street market: An Object-Centered Comparative Analysis of Interstitial Spaces
A neighborhood bazaar run by a community organization in Saint-Denis in the Greater Paris region, an 'informal' cultural street market in downtown Mexico City run by the oldest members of the Punk-Rock community. . . Two spaces that have in common the circulation of objects and a dense web of affective interactions between people and commodities. This article shows how the circulation of objects creates interstitial spaces between the public and …

City of Repair: Practicing the Future in Mexico City
This essay is based on long-term ethnographic research in Mexico City, and centers on a street epistemology that involves researchers immersing themselves in material street life to explore the relationships between the body, the house and the street in the constant repair of the (future) city. I assert that Mexico City is not a city dominated by planners, experts, or professional social workers, but rather a place where everyone knows that perfe…

Politics and Community-Based Research: Perspectives from Yeoville Studio, Johannesburg
This book is a new and courageous examination of the complexity of embedded research. It is an honest and insightful reflection that ... challenges and deepens arguments around spaces of participation through theoretical reflection and, more centrally, through the actual experience of the embedded research of Yeoville Studio. It is an important work for this and other reasons
State Theory from the Street Altar: The Muscles, the Saint and theAmparo
This article identifies traces of the state in three urban neighborhoods of Mexico City. Instead of asking what is the state, where is it located or what does it do, the question posed here is: what are the effects of state practices at the street level? By ethnographically and visually describing how protection is performed, the article argues that the state is not only 'somewhere' in specific functions, actors or institutions; it also manifests…
Informalization of the State: Reflections from an Urban World of Translations
The project of globalizing informality requires the circulation of concepts and theories from the 'South' to the 'North'. It also relies on intertextuality and exchanges across languages and sites of academic production. This essay is a reaction to the collection of papers presented in this forum. It argues for more academic conversations between languages and cities in order to contribute to a general state theory
The youth on the move: French and Canadian young people’s relationship with the car
While the overall number of holders of driving licences has continued \nto increase among OECD countries, there has been a rupture among \nyoung people since the 2000s. Youth aged 30 and under are less likely \nto take the driving test than their counterparts ten or twenty years \nearlier. Several explanatory hypotheses have been proposed. While \nsome researchers put forward two economic factors (higher fuel \nprices and the effects of the econo…
Life as Art: Emerging Youth Networks in Hanoi and the Tree Hug Movement
Drawing on two years of fieldwork in Hanoi, this paper explores what it means to be young and politically engaged in a post-reform communist city that has recently integrated into the global economy and international culture. We suggest that many young people's desire to assert more playful urban lifestyles and to live their "lives as art" contributed to their engagement in the Tree Hug Movement that swept Hanoi in the spring of 2015. Using inter…
We or them,’ ‘you and I,’ and ‘I’: Spaces of intimacy and (not so) public displays of affection in Hanoi
Through an exploratory study of romantic heterosexual couples in a public park situated in Hanoi’s outskirts, this article offers a conceptual rethinking of a western understanding of the park’s public/private dichotomy which can then be used to better appreciate how these categories are evolving in western urbanizing societies and their impacts on gender relations. By developing a relational, spatialized understanding of how young romantic coupl…
Introduction: A processual approach to informalization
This introduction briefly reviews the intertwinement of 'informality' and 'modernization' and their implications for the theory and practice of the city. The editors identify the importance of recognizing uneven processes of informalization, emphasizing the need to compare the quality of state-citizen-market relations more than the quantity of 'informality.' In the process they ask whether and how informal and formal practices can help to rethink…
Global Urban Politics: Informalization of the State
Time, Space, and Rationality: Rethinking Political Action through the Example of Montreal's Student Spring
Because of a changing relationship with time, space, and affect in a more urbanized world, political actions and social movement practices have transcended the modern, state-oriented logic of action. Following this claim, this paper questions a specifically urban way of acting politically. To answer this question, we need to begin by “looking” for politics in the kinds of places that political scientists generally overlook for political analysis.…
Uneven state formalization and periurban housing production in Hanoi and Mexico City: Comparative reflections from the global South
In the early 2000s, Vietnam and Mexico turned to the private sector to respond to increasing housing demand and tame the growth of uncontrolled periurban settlements. Around Hanoi, such arrangements fostered the construction of vertical developments while large subdivisions of single-family houses spread over former lakebeds in the peripheries of Mexico City. A stronger role of the private sector in the planning and provision of housing is often …
Youth-Driven Tactics of Public Space Appropriation in Hanoi: The Case of Skateboarding and Parkour
Starting in the 2000s, there has been a rise in youth-led appropriation of public spaces in Hanoi, Vietnam. Through case studies of skateboarders and traceurs (practitioners of parkour) in two of the city’s formal public spaces, we explore and analyze the tactics deployed by these young urbanites to claim a part of the characteristically overcrowded and socio-politically restrictive public spaces of the Vietnamese capital. These case studies show…
Local Integration Experiments in the New Urban Areas of Hanoi
In the peri-urban zones of many South East Asian cities, capital has flowed into the development of new, middle class urban enclaves. A significant body of scholarship sees these places as embodying some of the worst elements of American-style suburban, gated communities: sterile, disconnected from their surroundings, isolating wealthy people from the surrounding urban life, etc. While it is no doubt true that such a negative view is frequently w…
Fear and youth citizenship practices: Insights from Montreal
This article explores how fear contributes to empowerment and citizenship practices among youth who choose alternative lifestyles. Fear is conceived in a threefold manner: (1) as a manipulated resource in the political process, (2) as energy to be tamed through individual will, and (3) as radiating from actors and flowing through situations of action. Through an examination of how ‘risk-taking’ youths play with fear, the article critically reflec…

Making New Political Spaces: Mobilizing Spatial Imaginaries, Instrumentalizing Spatial Practices, and Strategically Using Spatial Tools
This paper explores space as the object of mobilization (rather than focusing on space as resource or constraint, or on the spatial configuration of actors within the organizational structure of a movement). In the context of state-restructuring processes, it is argued that new political spaces result not only from social movement activities (as in the drive for 'free spaces'), but also in a dynamic interaction between state and civil society act…
New State Spaces in Canada: Metropolitanization in Montreal and Toronto Compared
This paper compares the transformation of metropolitan institutions in two Canadian city-regions (Toronto and Montreal). Taking Neil Brenner's argument about new state spaces as a starting point, we discuss comparatively how governance restructuring in recently consolidated Toronto and Montreal has been part of more general changes to the architecture of governance in Canada. We look specifically at changes to the mediation channels between civil…
Seceding from Responsibility? Secession Movements in Los Angeles
This paper seeks to understand why secession movements gained momentum in Los Angeles and what their effect will be on regional governance. A brief discussion of liberal theories of secession demonstrates that they cannot explain secession movements at the urban scale, as they are exclusively focused on cases of nationalist secession from a nation-state. Furthermore, liberal theories of secession offer normative arguments on the right to secede. …
Understanding the causes of urban fragmentation in Hanoi: The case of new urban areas
Since the late 1990s, a new model of urban development has been promoted in Vietnam. So-called 'new urban areas' are being built on the agricultural lands at the periurban interface of cities across the country. These large-scale redevelopments feature commodity housing and public services, along with commercial and office space. Foreign scholars have criticised the lack of integration between these built environments and existing urban agglomera…
The Politics of Territorialization: Regionalism, Localism and Other Isms … the Case of Montreal
In a general context of state reforms, there is an emerging consensus on the strategic role of city-regions in the global economy. As it is the case in other city-regions, state-led regional reforms in Montreal are enmeshed in a series of clashes between the Left and the Right, the Provincial government and local municipalities, and the inner city and the suburbs. However, Montreal also presents an intriguing case of territorial struggles centere…
Taking the bus daily and demonstrating on Sunday: Reflections on the formation of political subjectivity in an urban world
This paper explores the reasons behind people’s engagement in political action, particularly the marginalized and threatened. Using the example of the marches against immigration reform in the USA, the paper follows immigrant women in an effort to understand what made them participate in those demonstrations despite risks of deportation, lack of experience in demonstrating and fear. Based on fieldwork with domestic workers in Los Angeles, we sugg…
Living with culture: Creative citizenship practices in Toronto
This paper addresses the contemporary creativity ethos through the lens of citizenship. The paper builds upon governmentality scholarship to examine how creativity and cultural participation are being recast as moral duties of active citizenship. It notes the development of governmental projects that seek to optimize the creative capacities of individuals toward a variety of ends. The paper develops these observations through an examination of cu…
Questioning the use of 'local democracy' as a discursive strategy for political mobilization in Los Angeles, Montreal and Toronto
Between 1997 and 2002, homeowners in various parts of Los Angeles sought to secede from the City. At the same time, in Toronto, the province of Ontario forced the amalgamation of six municipalities forming a new megacity of 2.4 million. Residents mobilized for several months. In 2000, the province of Quebec forced the merger of 28 local municipalities in Montreal, forming a new city of 1.8 million. Angst came mostly from suburban Anglophone munic…

Is there regionalism after municipal amalgamation in Toronto
This article reflects on the results of metropolitan governance restructuring in Canada’s largest city, Toronto, during the 'long 1990s’, the time period roughly between the collapse of international property markets in the late 1980s and the events of 9/11/01. Strategic Territorialisation: The Politics of Anglo–Montrealers
Constitutional entanglements in Canada–Quebec relations are well known. From one referendum on Quebec’s sovereignty to the other, from one pan–Canadian constitutional meeting to the other, the ‘Quebec problem’ seems irresolvable. One dimension is constantly overlooked in this debate: territorial identity. Territorially–based cultural claims emerge in the core of urban Quebec under the leadership of partitionist and localist movements. Originally …
