  • Informed Non-Use: The Hazards of Mobilising Law in Precarious Housing Arrangements

    Open Access•Anna Wy, Katharina Winkler et al.•ARTICLE•Social & Legal Studies•2026•References: 17

This article explores why individuals in vulnerable positions may not mobilise available legal avenues to protect themselves from harm, despite being aware of their existence. Drawing on data relating to precarious housing situations in Berlin and Zurich, we argue that the assumption that mobilising the law would improve the situation of individuals is not always accurate. We present three dimensions of non-mobilisation that prevent individuals f…

  • Intersecting Precarities in Housing and Legal Status: No Residence Permit Without Permanent Residence

    Open Access•Katharina Winkler, Anna Wy•ARTICLE•Critical Sociology•2025•References: 46

This article shows that different manifestations of precarity often interact and mutually reinforce each other. Drawing on a research project on precarious housing in two cities in Germany and Switzerland and focusing on migratised individuals, we show that people frequently encounter precarity not only in terms of housing but also in terms of legal status. We argue that narrowly concentrating on isolated areas of people's lives may overlook the …

  • Places and mobilities: Studying Human Movements Using Place as an Entry Point

Slape, LAPE SLAPE et al.•ARTICLE•Mobilities•2023•Cited by: 8•References: 69

This interdisciplinary special issue brings mobility scholars and migration scholars together to examine how places and mobilities are entangled. It asks whether using place as an entry point for studying human movements can reveal new insights into our understanding and conceptualisation of mobility. In this introduction we demonstrate, based on the contributions gathered in this special issue, how using place as an entry point for studying mobi…

  • Navigating the European Migration Regime: An Ethnography of Unwanted Migrants

Open Access•Anna Wy, Anna Wyss•BOOK•Masculinity, Precarity and the…•2022

EPDF and EPUB available Open Access under CC-BY-NC- ND Anna Wyss’ survey of the heavily politicised group of male migrants in Europe provides insightful analysis of both masculinity and the European migration crisis. The book tracks men’s repeated attempts to achieve permanent residence status and the successive detentions and deportations they endure. It measures the effects of precarity on their lives and explores the hope and vulnerability the…

  • Disentangling entangled mobilities: Reflections on forms of knowledge production within migration studies

    Open Access•Anna Wy, J Dahinden•ARTICLE•Comparative Migration Studies•2022•Cited by: 24•References: 39

European migration studies have been criticised for having certain epistemological and theoretical underpinnings that reproduce hegemonic structures, especially the ‘national order of things’ and colonial legacies. In this article, we propose the concept of ‘entangled mobilities’ to address some of these challenges. Entangled mobilities as a theoretical lens enables us to study specific global and transnational processes, the ways in which they a…

  • Working for Protection? Precarious Legal Inclusion of Afghan Nationals in Germany and Switzerland

    Open Access•Anna Wy, Carolin Fischer•ARTICLE•Antipode•2022•Cited by: 14•References: 51

This paper engages with the violent conditions deriving from neoliberal trends in European migration and asylum governance. We explore how continuous precarity, in conjunction with an integration imperative, affects the lives of recently arrived Afghan refugees in Germany and Switzerland. Drawing on critical engagements with the politics of integration and theories of violence, we argue that, in both European countries, Afghans are increasingly f…

  • Informing for the sake of it: Legal intricacies, acceleration and suspicion in the German and Swiss migration regimes

    Open Access•L M Borrelli, Anna Wy•ARTICLE•Citizenship Studies•2022•Cited by: 7•References: 34

In migration law, being informed about legal and administrative procedures constitutes an essential procedural safeguard. Yet, in practice, the transparency of legal practices is often structurally undermined, resulting in the curtailment of procedural safeguards and potentially affecting perceptions of procedural justice. Building on our multi-sited ethnographic research in Germany and Switzerland, we first argue that migrants find it often diff…

  • States of Suspicion: How Institutionalised Disbelief Shapes Migration Control Regimes

    L M Borrelli, A Lindberg et al.•ARTICLE•Geopolitics•2022•Cited by: 23•References: 48

This special section emerged out of discussions between a group of scholars researching border and migration control regimes in Europe. In our research, we had all identified suspicion as characteristic of migration governance. We saw it in the anxiety-ridden public discourses surrounding ‘unwanted’ immigration, in increasingly repressive legal frameworks, in bureaucratic classification schemes and technologies designed to identify suspected, ill…

    Open Access•Tobias G Eule, L M Borrelli et al.•BOOK•Migrants Before the Law•2019

    Anna Wy•ARTICLE•Journal of Immigrant & Refugee…•2019•Cited by: 31•References: 21

Due to lack of access to work and support services migrants with precarious legal status engage in onward mobility within EUrope and thus contest the migration regime that aims to control and limit their mobility. This article highlights the ambiguous nature of mobility from a critical mobilities perspective based on multi-sited ethnographic research and interviews with migrants in Austria, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland. By focusing on their in…

  • Illegalisation, Masculinity and Intimacy: The Impact of Public Images on Male Migrants with a Precarious Legal Status

Open Access•Anna Wy, Anna Wyss•ARTICLE•Swiss Journal of Sociocultural…•2018

The «Event Köln» (Dietze 2016) has shown how public images of migrant men as being potentially dangerous to women can be exploited for justifying more restrictive migration control. The reported sexual assaults of women by migrant men from North Africa in Cologne on New Year’s Eve 2015 were followed by a moral panic and political demands to expel «those who were believed to endanger post-feminist Germany» (Boulila et al. 2017: 286). This event fo…

  • Contested control at the margins of the state

    Tobias G Eule, David Loher et al.•ARTICLE•New Community•2018•Cited by: 53•References: 56

While the fact that the implementation of migration policies fails to perfectly manage migration is well known, the actual dynamics of policy implementation have received little attention to date. A serious engagement with this phenomenon requires a move beyond policy texts and political intentions, and towards a 'migration regime' perspective that pays attention to the inherent contradictions, conflicts of interest and competing logics within mi…
