The state of fibre at Gapuwiyak, Arnhem Land
Hand-crafted fibre objects from Arnhem Land are part of a long tradition of making objects primarily from plant materials for everyday and ceremonial use. Fibre objects made today in Gapuwiyak have been inspired from the world around them and from older classic items. The older items from the general region of eastern Arnhem Land are located in museums in Australia, America, Great Britain and Europe. Old and new items include baskets, string bags…

This article seeks to advance an understanding of biting bags, small looped string bags, made by Aboriginal people from an island in Arnhem Land, Milingimbi. Milingi…
Thomson Times and Ten Canoes (de Heer and Djigirr, 2006)
Ten Canoes (de Heer and Djigirr, 2006) is a collaboration between Rolf de Heer and members of the Ramingining community in eastern Arnhem Land. The film ostensibly has two time frames: a ‘mythical past’ which could be called ‘the Dreaming’ and the historical time in which the protagonist, Dayindi, lives, which is given as ‘1000 years ago’ (Vertigo 2006: 3). The development of Ten Canoes drew upon the writings of Donald Thomson and his collection …
A Question of Time
Wrapt with String
In Australia Aboriginal people have always been “wrapt” in string, conceptually and practically in historical and Ancestral times. This article has a geographic focus on Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory, and a temporal concentration on the 1930s and early 1940s. The Donald Thomson collection from the region will be the main source of images and objects relating to string. His collection provides a representative view of life during those tim…
