Religious ethno-populism in contemporary Greece: Analysing the discourse of the Níki party
This article examines the ideological foundations and discursive strategies of Níki, Greece’s first distinctly faith-based party. Using the Essex School approach to discourse studies, it examines Níki’s social conservatism, foreign policy, migration stance and media reception. The party constructs a type of political identity rooted in Eastern Orthodoxy, cultural essentialism and the defence of a threatened spiritual heritage. Its discourse is et…
A populist version of religious rigorism in contemporary Greece? The case of the Níki party
High-Season Piety: An Ethnographic Account of Community, Commensality, and Ritual in Anafi Island's Summertime Orthodox Christian Religious Practices
This paper explores the material culture of religious life on the Greek island of Anafi during the peak tourism season of summer 2023. Through ethnographic fieldwork, the paper examines the public celebration of a number of feasts coinciding with the summer high season: the Transfiguration of Christ, one of the Great Feasts of the Orthodox Church, celebrated on the sixth of August; the Dormition of the Theotokos (Mary the "Birthgiver of God") on …
A Parallax View on Eastern Orthodox Aesthetics: From the Ethos of Liturgical Art to Dionysis Savvopoulos' Aesthetic Eschatology
This study explores Eastern Orthodox aesthetics through a parallax lens, situating it at the intersection of theology, anthropology, and cultural practice to move beyond the icon-centric discourse. It examines how Orthodox aesthetics, rooted in the theological vision of beauty as divine disclosure, manifests in liturgical ethos, material culture, and secular artistic expression. The analysis draws on Christos Yannaras' ethos of liturgical art, Ch…
Fire, Beards, and Bread: Exploring Christian East-West Relations à Propos of Edward Siecienski's (Latest) Work
The debate on Christian East-West relations usually centres on the "usual suspects": papal primacy, the filioque and core doctrine in general, the interpretation of Scripture, ecclesiology, and so on. This review article of Edward Siecienski's Beards, Azymes, and Purgatory explores other issues that divide East and West, particularly those that may be approached via material ecologies: Fire, Beards, and Bread. "Bread" as in the debate on the Azym…
An attempt at clarifying Maximus the Confesor’s remarks on (the fate of) sexual difference in Ambiguum 41
Maximus the Confessor?s Ambiguum 41 contains some rather atypical observations concerning the distinction of sexes in the human person. There is a certain ambiguity as to whether the distinction of the sexes was intended by God and is ?by nature? (as found in Genesis and asserted by most Church Fathers) or a product of the Fall. Namely, Christ is described three times as ?shaking out of nature the distinctive characteristics of male and female?, …
The Eucharistic Community is Our Social Program: On the Early Development of Christos Yannaras' Political Theology
Usually focusing on Roman Catholic and Protestant trajectories of thought, political theology seldom takes note of Orthodox Christianity and the politically informed theology and/or theologically informed politics it engenders. In this paper, I engage certain aspects of the contemporary political theology of Christos Yannaras, an academic philosopher, Christian Orthodox theologian and Greek public intellectual. I focus (a) on his understanding of…
On Recent Developments in Scholarly Engagement with (the Possibility of an) Orthodox Political Theology
Exotic as the very notion of an Eastern Orthodox political theology at times seems to be, a fair share of attention has been recently directed to the possibility of it through a number of conferences, workshops and publications. In this Review Essay, I am discussing three recent edited volumes on Orthodox political theology, broadly conceived. These exhibit a certain continuity between them and, as edited volumes should, are characterized by a he…
