The Success of Failure
It is always more pleasant to talk about success than failure. The boss conducting performance reviews much prefers to tell staff members that they have done a good job than a poor one. It is less confrontational. The teacher-student relationship is not one of boss-employee, of course, but similar dynamics can be in play. Performance reviews naturally take the form of assigning grades. Time was, as every academic knows or suspects, when grades as…

The Pencil
The history of the pencil as technological artifact is reviewed starting from the mid-16th century when graphite deposits were discovered in Cumberland, and the mineral was cut to fit into wood cases. The design of the artifact changed little over the centuries. Economic and social considerations, as well as cultural expectations, are also studied as are circumstances explaining the ubiquity of the pencil

The Impact of Society on Technology
While it is true that technological developments have major impacts upon society, it is also true that society itself shapes the form of technological artifacts. In particular, there are significant social and cultural influences on the design and construction of major engineering structures like long-span bridges and large enclosed spaces, and it is unlikely that whatever is simply technologically achievable at a given time is what will be built…

On 19th-Century Perceptions of Iron Bridge Failures
The series of communications on iron bridge failures in the October 1981 issue of Technology and Culture (22:846-50) is curious in that it pits several humanists against one another in a debate over numbers. To an engineer, exactly how many railway bridges failed in the 19th century is not so important as the fact that failures did occur. The collapse of a single bridge of a relatively new material or design should have been enough to make contem…
