Associated Factors and Survival Outcomes for Breast Conserving Surgery versus Mastectomy among New Zealand Women with Early-Stage Breast Cancer
This study aimed to investigate type of loco-regional treatment received, associated treatment factors and mortality outcomes in New Zealand women with early-stage breast cancer who were eligible for breast conserving surgery (BCS). This is a retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data from the Auckland and Waikato Breast Cancer Registers and involves 6972 women who were diagnosed with early-stage primary breast cancer (I-IIIa) between…
Use of Non-Cancer Medications in New Zealand Women at the Diagnosis of Primary Invasive Breast Cancer
Non-cancer medication use at breast cancer diagnosis was common in New Zealand, more prevalent in older and disadvantaged women, and showed no effect on breast cancer-specific mortality, but a reduction in other cause mortality with the use of 2-3 drugs
Urban Rural Differences in Breast Cancer in New Zealand
Many rural communities have poor access to health services due to a combination of distance from specialist services and a relative shortage of general practitioners. Our aims were to compare the characteristics of urban and rural women with breast cancer in New Zealand, to assess breast cancer-specific and all-cause survival using the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional hazards model, and to assess whether the impact of rurality is differen…
Vitamin and mineral supplements in pregnancy and the risk of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia
Our own study, of similar size to the Australian study, does not support the hypothesis of a protective effect of folate on childhood ALL. Neither do the findings of the meta-analysis

Default in the outpatient treatment of tuberculosis in two hospitals in Northern India
STUDY OBJECTIVE--The purpose of the study was to examine default rates in tuberculosis treatment in two hospitals in north India with different follow up arrangements. DESIGN--The study was a retrospective cohort study. SETTING--Two hospitals were involved. One was the District Tuberculosis Centre for the Kulu Valley area of Himachal Pradesh. The other was a private mission hospital serving the same area. PATIENTS--The study involved 321 patients…

Research in epidemiology and community health in the medical curriculum
Medical students in Nottingham all complete an honours Bachelor of Medical Sciences course in one department including a research project. The honours programme in community health is described, with results from a survey of the 122 graduates since the medical school started. The 98 (80%) responses showed high levels of satisfaction and gain from the programme, the great majority regarding the course as valuable, enjoyable, and giving both resear…
Epidemiology and community health in the medical curriculum
The epidemiology and community health teaching programme in the medical curriculum in Nottingham is described. Epidemiology is taught as a major scientific discipline in the first two years, in addition to being applied to clinical situations in the later years. All students undertake a research project in the third year, and examples of these are given
The End of the Drop in Twinning Rates?
Twinning and anencephalus occurrence in relation to fetus-fetus interaction
The hypothesis proposed by Knox (1970) that an anencephalic fetus arises from a fetus-fetus interaction between two dizygous twins predicts that the twinning rate, the population incidence of anencephalus, and the female proportion of anencephalics in a population should be positively interrelated. These associations were tested using Canadian data during a long period of time and over a large geographical area. The results did not support the hy…
A test for seasonality of events with a variable population at risk
A statistical significance test to detect seasonality of epidemiological events is described. The method is similar to that of Edwards, but makes it possible to allow for an arbitrary pattern of variation in the population risk, and also for the unequal lengths of time sectors of a cycyle of seasons (e.g., months of a year). From the test it is possible to estimate the amplitude of seasonal variation and the time at which the maximum occurs in a …
Seasonal variation in anencephalus in Canada
A study of the monthly numbers of stillbirths and of deaths due to anencephalus in Canada from 1954 to 1962 showed a weak tendency to a winter excess of affected births. The seasonal trend was more marked in the Prarie provinces and in Quebec than elsewhere; the maximum rate of anencephalus occurrence was in October to December in the Prairies and in British Columbia, and in January to March in other regions
Changes in the twinning rate in Canada 1926-70
Large variations in the 'twinning rate', i.e., the ratio of twin confinements to total confinements, between different countries and between different time periods have been reported by many authors. Apart from well documented variations in twinning rate with maternal age and parity, little is known of the causes of these variations, which mainly affect dizygotic twinning. James (1972) has reported rapid falls of 20-25% in dizygotic twinning rate…
