Measuring the effects of electoral systems on regionalism
Does the Candidate Make a Difference? The Macro-Politics and Micro-Politics of Getting Elected
Does Canada Need a New Electoral System
Do Frozen Cleavages Ever Go Stale? The Bases of the Canadian and Australian Party Systems
The title of this paper derives from two sets of observations. The first, from Lipset and Rokkan, asserts that Western party systems reflect (or, at least, reflected in the mid-1960s) a congealment of political conflicts dating from the 1920s or earlier. The second, taken generally from the growing concern about political ungovernability, suggests that contemporary party systems are losing their capacity to structure choice effectively in Western…

The Prime Minister's mailbag
This study is based on examination of a randomly selected sample of 2,150 letters representing all the mail received by Prime Minister Trudeau between February 1969 and June 1972. The object of the study was to ascertain the characteristics of the letter‐writers and the nature of their concerns, arguments and strategies. Through interviews with the staff of the Correspondence Section of the Prime Minister's Office we were also able to discover ho…
Explaining the Religious Basis of the Canadian Partisan Identity: Success on the Third Try
The various subtables of Table i, or some variant of them, must be familiar to every teacher and to every student of Canadian voting behaviour. While most of our history books, and certainly all of our current concerns, focus on cultural differences in Canada, all our voting and party identification data suggest that the primary line of political division is between Roman Catholics and non-Catholics. The leftmost tables in the two rows of Table i…

Recruitment to Nationalism: New Politics or Normal Politics
Assessing Regional Effects in Data Analysis
When a panel is composed of residents from three or four of the conventionally defined Canadian regions, the issue of whether or not regionalism still persists in Canada is already to a large extent prejudged. For this reason, and also because I am doubtful of my credentials as either an interpreter or bearer of any particular set of regional values, I propose to address myself to the problem of how one can measure regional effects

Shaw, War and Peace: 1894 To 1919
Shaw's Quintessence of Ibsenism
Shaw, the Fabians, and the Utilitarians
George Bernard Shaw and Karl Marx
In spite of a vast critical literature of increasing agreement, Shaw is stillregarded by many as an irresponsible clown and by many more as a negligible thinker on serious subjects. No one can read about him without realizing that he is anything but negligible. Mr. T. A. Knowlton has thought his economics worthy of lengthy and respectful treatment, and many authorities have attested to his importance in the history of socialism. In her recent wor…

Art. XXV.— Note on Nicolaò Manucci and his “Storia do Mogor .”
In 1705 there appeared at Paris a work entitled “Histoire générale de l'empire mogol depuis sa fondation, sur les Mémoires portugais de M. Manouchi, Venitien” (4to, pp. 272, also in 12mo, 2 vols.), by Father Fran ̧is Catrou, of the Company of Jésus. The narrative breaks off at the end of the war of succession between Aurangzeb and his brothers (1658–9). In 1715 the same writer supplemented the above work by bringing out what he calls a Third Part…

Art. XIII.— The Army of the Indian Moghuls: Its Organization and Administration
In 1894 I began the preparatory studies for an account of the later Indian Moghul system of government and administration in all its branches, being impelled by the belief that some information of the kind was a necessary introduction to a History of that period, which I had previously planned and commenced. Before I had done more than sketch out my first part, which deals with the Sovereign, the Court Ceremonial, and the elaborate system of Enti…

Note on Bibi Juliana and the Christians at Agrah
a paper at a meeting of the Society on the above subject, perhaps the extracts herewith sent, from letters written by a Catholic priest, one of Bibi Juliana's descendants, may be of interest to those who were present on the occasion referred to. Dr. J. P. Val d'Eremao was in feeble health at the time he wrote, and I regret that his death not long afterwards prevented our ever meeting, or the further prosecution of our joint researches. His statem…
