  • Archaeomagnetic Tools Applied to the Study of Middle Palaeolithic Hearths

    Open Access•Judit del Río, A Palencia‐orta et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology•2025

Due to its long occupation throughout the Middle Palaeolithic and the abundance of its pyrotechnological evidence, the Abric Romaní rockshelter (Capellades, Barcelona) provides an ideal setting for studying Neanderthal fire use. We conducted an archaeomagnetic study of four hearths from Level R ( ca. 60 ky BP). Rock magnetism experiments, including hysteresis loops, and backfield, isothermal remanent magnetisation acquisition and thermo-magnetic …

  • The First Archaeomagnetic Age at Tiwanaku and Implications for Dating Andean Metallurgical Furnaces

    Open Access•Judit del Río, P Cruz et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2025•References: 42

This paper presents the first archaeomagnetic dating at Tiwanaku (Andean Altiplano). We compared the geomagnetic field values recorded by a metallurgical furnace against an updated SHAWQ2k‐SH global model and a regional intensity curve, both of which include, for the first time, high‐quality intensity data from the Southern Hemisphere. Results place the furnace's last use in 450–740 ce , and the decorated ceramic chronology at the site further co…

  • Archaeomagnetic study of a limekiln in the Les Ferreres Roman aqueduct, World Heritage Site of Tarraco

  • New Archaeomagnetic Data Recovered From the Study of Three Roman Kilns From North‐east Spain

    Open Access•Miriam Gómez-Paccard, M GÓMEZ‐PACCARD et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 36

New archaeomagnetic results from three archaeological kilns recovered from one archaeological site in north‐east Spain are reported. The abandonment of kilns BC1 and BC2 has been dated by archaeological evidence to between ad 0 and ad 50, whereas kiln BC3 was abandoned later, between ad 50 and ad 150. Mean archaeomagnetic directions and archaeointensities have been obtained from classical Thellier experiments. The new data are consistent with pre…
