  • Politicized, moral and personal motivations of refugee helpers in the context of the war in Ukraine / Motivaciones politizadas, morales y personales de quienes prestan ayuda a los refugiados en el con…

Open Access•Nóra Anna Lantos, Ladislas Farago et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2025

We tested motivations and conditions of helping intention towards refugees from Ukraine in three Central European countries. Our aim was twofold: to test how personal, moral and politicized motivation predicted sustainability of helping, and how these motivations were connected to conditionality of helping, specifically to stereotypical expectations of refugees to fit the image of the helpless but grateful help recipients. We anticipated that hel…

  • Strategies to combat misinformation

Open Access•Gabor Orosz, Ladislas Farago et al.•ARTICLE•Computers in Human Behavior•2024

How is it possible to socialize adolescents to become more vigilant in spotting fake news? In the present preregistered, randomized controlled trial (N = 1476), we aimed to implement a scalable, online counter-misinformation intervention by promoting family-based prosocial values and putting them in an expert role to build resistance against misinformation among adolescents. In this intervention, participants were endowed with an expert role and …

  • When the shoe does not fit

Open Access•Hanna Szekeres, Nóra Anna Lantos et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community & Applied…•2024•References: 7

We tested how individuals' dispositional perspective‐taking impacts the effectiveness of an intergroup perspective‐taking intervention aimed to reduce anti‐Gypsyism in Hungary. For the intervention, we adapted a role‐playing book with a Roma adolescent protagonist (called the ‘Gypsy Maze’). We predicted that the intervention would be more effective in reducing prejudice for stronger perspective‐takers, compared to weaker, for whom it may even be …

  • From #RelationshipGoals to #Heartbreak – We use Instagram differently in various romantic relationship statuses

    Open Access•Lili Fejes-Vékássy, Adrienn Ujhelyi et al.•ARTICLE•Current Psychology•2022

Nowadays Social Media plays a key role in the formation, maintenance and breaking up of romantic relationships. Instagram, one of the most popular platforms among young adults, was examined by many researchers from the viewpoints of e.g. relationship goals, satisfaction and conflicts. These studies concentrate on the impact of online activities on relationships. With this current research our aim is to widen this perspective: we attempt to invest…

  • Criminalization as a justification for violence against the homeless in Hungary

Ladislas Farago, Dávid Ferenczy-Nyúl et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Social Psychology•2022

Criminalization of social groups can create new norms for intergroup relations. An example for this is the 2018 amendment to the Hungarian Fundamental Law, which openly criminalizes homeless people. In our research, we investigated whether criminalization of homelessness can become a source of justifying violence against homeless people in the Hungarian context. We assumed that right-wing authoritarianism and social dominance orientation would po…

  • If you can dream it, you can do it!—The role of sexual orientation in preferences toward boys' and girls' career orientation and gendered behaviour

Open Access•Éva Magdolna Kántás, Ladislas Farago et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 67

We argue that parental attitudes of (prospective) children's gendered behavior are influenced by sexual orientation and the given social climate. In Study 1 ( N = 448), moderated mediations showed that sexual orientation predicted whether or not high‐status occupations are preferred for the (prospective) children through modern sexism. For girls, however, the perceived stability of the gender hierarchy moderated the effect of modern sexism. In an…

  • We Only Believe in News That We Doctored Ourselves

Ladislas Farago, Ágnes Kende et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychology•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 38

In this research we aimed to explore the importance of partisanship behind the belief in wish-fulfilling political fake news. We tested the role of political orientation, partisanship, and conspiracy mentality in the acceptance of pro- and anti-government pipedream fake news. Using a representative survey ( N = 1,000) and a student sample ( N = 382) in Hungary, we found that partisanship predicted belief in political fake news more strongly than …

  • Justification of intergroup violence – the role of right-wing authoritarianism and propensity for radical action

Open Access•Ladislas Farago, Ágnes Kende et al.•ARTICLE•Dynamics of Asymmetric Conflict•2019•Cited by: 7•References: 18

Economic and political trends of the last decades resulted in a general rise in anti-minority populism in Hungary. Anti-minority sentiments have been manifested in violence primarily against the Roma, but also against other target groups. The aim of the current study is to reveal the social psychological mechanisms of justifying intergroup violence against outgroups representing a symbolic or a physical threat. Considering that right-wing authori…
