  • AMS radiocarbon ages of Holocene tephras from Iraya Volcano in the northern Philippines

    Open Access•Mitsuru Okuno, Robjunelieaaa B Lim et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2026•References: 7

Iraya Volcano, situated at the northern tip of Batan Island in the Batanes group, marks the northernmost extent of the Philippine archipelago. Aside from the presence of accessible tephra deposits, the numerous archaeological sites on the island provide key insight into tephrochronology and volcanic hazard assessment. This paper presents stratigraphy and 21 radiocarbon ages of Holocene tephra layers distributed on the island. The eruption ages of…

  • Identification of stratigraphic duplication using radiocarbon dating

Open Access•Mitsuru Okuno, Masayuki Torii et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2026•References: 10

A large-scale outcrop was exposed along the newly constructed road access to the Kumamoto Earthquake Museum “KIOKU” (former Tokai University Aso Campus). Multiple layers of tephra and paleosols cover the Sawatsuno lava (27 ± 6 K-Ar ka) in this outcrop. Three (3) characteristic tephra layers: Kusasenrigahama Pumice (Kpfa: ca. 32.5 cal ka BP) from Kusasenrigahama crater in Aso caldera, Aira Tn (AT: ca. 30 cal ka BP) and Kikai Akahoya (K-Ah: ca. 7.3…

  • New data and synthesis of ΔR estimates from the northern Pacific Ocean

    Open Access•B F Khasanov, B Fitzhugh et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2022

We present new data on regional correction factor (ΔR) conducted for Chukotka, the Commander Islands, and the western Aleutian Islands and summarize data previously published for the other parts of the region. Paired radiocarbon dates of coeval marine and terrestrial materials from the archaeological site Kaniskak were obtained in Chukotka, and one such pair was analyzed from Shemya Island (western Aleutians). Three samples of sea otter ( Enhydra…

  • A 7300-yr-old environmental history of seabird, human, and volcano impacts on Carlisle Island (the Islands of Four Mountains, eastern Aleutians, Alaska)

    Open Access•E A Kuzmicheva, O I Smyshlyaeva et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2019

We present the results of multiproxy study of a peat deposit from Carlisle Island (the Islands of Four Mountains, Aleutians). Vegetation on the initial stage of the peat is characterized by heath vegetation dominated by Ericales indicating cold conditions at 7300–6100 cal yr BP. The appearance of Betula and Alnus is the result of long-distance transportation attributable to strong winds at this time. Sedge-grass (Cyperaceae and Poaceae) communiti…

  • Human resilience and resettlement among the Islands of Four Mountains, Aleutians, Alaska

    Open Access•Virginia Hatfield, Virginia L Hatfield et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2019

Combined archaeological, ecological, and geologic research on Chuginadak and Carlisle Islands in the Islands of Four Mountains (IFM) probed questions about the sustainability of human settlements over the past 4000 years in the face of geologic, ecological, and social hazards. We use a human ecodynamics approach to frame the investigation and present original archaeological evidence from this poorly known region of the remote Aleutian Islands. Se…

  • Verification of the Annual Dating of the 10th Century Baitoushan Volcano Eruption Based on an AD 774–775 Radiocarbon Spike

Open Access•Masataka Hakozaki, Fusa Miyake et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2018•Cited by: 8•References: 17

The so-called Millennium Eruption of Baitoushan Volcano is one of the largest of the Common Era but its date has been uncertain. Recently, Oppenheimer et al. (2017) reported the eruptive year as late AD 946 using a new method called carbon-14 spike matching. However, it is necessary to verify their result to confirm the eruptive year, since only one wood sample was used in their study. We verified the eruptive year by measuring 14 C contents in t…

  • Vegetation Changes around Haven Lake, Adak Island, Central Aleutians, Alaska, Determined from Pollen Analysis

Open Access•Makoto Noguchi, Toshiyuki Fujiki et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2018•References: 13

We collected peat sediments (sediment core ADK13083002) from Haven Lake on the north side of Adak Island (central Aleutian Islands, Alaska) to determine whether the vegetation has changed. We confirmed the presence of six tephra layers, including Forty Years (0.3 cal ka BP), T2, YBO (3.3 cal ka BP), Intermediate (6.4 cal ka BP), Main (9.5 cal ka BP), and T6. We identified four major pollen assemblage zones (HL-1 to HL-4, in descending order) in t…

It is of great interest to know how much the land expanded towards the ocean as the result of the sea-level decrease during the Würm glacial stage. The existence of land bridges, that plays an important role in transporting human, animals and plants between the Eurasian Continent and the Japanese Islands during the Last Glacial, is still under debate. Geographical and geological studies have been performed to determine the location of shorelines …

In the historic period, several large eruptions were recorded from Kirishima, Sakurajima and Kaimondake volcanoes in southern Kyushu, Japan. Estimated dates of volcanic activity were established on these volcanoes through historical documentation of major eruption events. This study presents the correspondence between these documents and the records of AMS 14 C dating of soils underlying tephra layers. We conclude that AMS 14 C dates of soil mate…

This area, occupying the western portion of an arc-bisecting dextral fault system, is a tectonic depression that has existed since ca. 5 Ma. Sedimentary facies, mollusk assemblages, and radiocarbon ( 14 C) ages of 25 terrestrial plant…

  • AMS Radiocarbon Dates of Pyroclastic-Flow Deposits on the Southern Slope of the Kuju Volcanic Group, Kyushu, Japan

The Kuju volcanic group, located in central Kyushu, Japan, consists of small stratovolcanoes and lava domes. To refine the eruptive history of the group, we conducted accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon dating of charcoal fragments from three pyroclastic-flow (PF) deposits on the southern slope. The obtained 14 C dates are consistent with the geomorphology, stratigraphy, and thermoluminescence (TL) ages. The Handa PF deposits, which a…
