  • Feeling well, feeling cared for? Using participatory and arts-engaged research to improve understanding and professional responses to the mental health needs of care-experienced young people

Open Access•Pearse McCusker, Christina Mcmellon et al.•ARTICLE•Educational Action Research•2025

Care-experienced young people face significant levels of mental distress yet the nature and lived reality of this is poorly understood and undermines the degree to which professional caregivers can provide effective support. This is exacerbated by the lack of ‘voice’ and control care-experienced young people have as active producers of knowledge through research. Using a small-scale, knowledge exchange project, we sought to address these concerns…

  • Coproducing an Ecological Momentary Assessment Measurement Burst Mental Health Study With Young People: The MHIM Coproduction Protocol

Open Access•Luke Power, Tong Xie et al.•ARTICLE•Health Expectations•2025

BACKGROUND: There is now widespread recognition within adolescence mental health research of the ethical imperative and benefits of coproduction. This has led to the development of best practice guidelines and the routine reporting of coproduction methods. However, there are unique considerations associated with involving young people in research with varying designs, e.g., longitudinal. Ideally, these decisions are made in consultation with youn…

  • Reconceptualising coproduction as activism together

    Open Access•Christina Mcmellon, Pearse McCusker et al.•ARTICLE•Children & Society•2024

The COVID‐19 pandemic disrupted life across the world in multiple ways and those already minoritised and disenfranchised, like care‐experienced young people, bore the brunt of losses and mental health difficulties. This article reports on the findings of ‘Feeling Well, Feeling Cared For’ an innovative knowledge exchange project on care experience and mental health in Scotland that was seriously disrupted by the pandemic. The article explores how …

  • The Cambridge History of the Age of Atlantic Revolutions

Open Access•David Andre, David Andress et al.•BOOK•Cambridge History of the Age of…•2023

Volume II delves into the revolutions of France, Europe, and Haiti, with particular focus on the French Revolution and the changes it wrought. The demarcation between property and power, and the changes in family life, religious practices, and socio-economic relations are explored, as well as the preoccupation with violence and terror, both of which were conspicuous aspects of the revolution. Simultaneous movements in England, Germany, Hungary, I…

  • The erasure of nature in the discourse of oil production: An enhanced eco-discourse analysis, Part 1

Open Access•Wenge Chen, Thomas Bartlett et al.•ARTICLE•Pragmatics and Society•2021

This two-part article suggests ways in which elements of antagonistic discourses of the environment might be combined in a hybrid, innovative discourse that appeals to a broad section of the public while advocating for more environmentally sustainable practices in industry. It proposes an enhanced Positive Discourse Analysis (PDA) that not only identifies points of fissure in the hegemonic discourse but also seeks points of convergence that can b…

  • Drilling for fissures and exploiting common ground in the discourse of oil production: An enhanced eco-discourse analysis, Part 2

Open Access•Wenge Chen, Thomas Bartlett et al.•ARTICLE•Pragmatics and Society•2021

This is the second part of a two-part article which proposes an enhanced approach to eco-discourses after weighing the (dis)advantages of mainstream Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Positive Discourse Analysis (PDA). Part I ( Chen et al. 2021 ) explored the theoretical grounding for an enhanced PDA, introduced the research method and then, based on the adapted analytic framework of Stibbe (2016) , undertook a critical analysis of the discour…

  • Time, the deer, is in the wood: Chronotopic identities, trajectories of texts and community self-management

Thomas Bartlett, Tom Bartlett•ARTICLE•Applied Linguistics Review•2021

This paper opens with a problematisation of the notion of real-time in discourse analysis – dissected, as it is, as if time unfolded in a linear and regular procession at the speed of speech. To illustrate this point, the author combines Hasan’s concept of “relevant context” with Bakhtin’s notion of the chronotope to provide an analysis of Sorley MacLean’s poem Hallaig , with its deep-rootedness in space and its dissolution of time. The remainder…

  • Nursing handovers as unbounded and scalar events

Thomas Bartlett, Tom Bartlett et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Linguistics Review•2021

In this paper we analyse data from nursing handover meetings in terms of the interplay of different voices that operate at different interactional and institutional scales. We suggest, firstly, that the handover is not a single bounded event, as suggested in previous literature, but rather a gradual moving in and out of focus of a particular discourse activity; and, secondly, that while different phases within the handover as an extended event ar…

Discourse theorists often defend their discursive stance on ‘reality’ and the material with reference to Laclau and Mouffe’s quote that, while an “earthquake or the falling of a brick...exist externally to thought,” they cannot “constitute themselves as objects outside any discursive conditions of emergence”. While fully endorsing this statement, we argue that it does not licence discourse theorists to consider discursive formations divorced from…

  • Conceptualising language awareness in healthcare communication: The case of nurse shift-change handover meetings

Tereza Spilioti, Michelle Aldridge et al.•ARTICLE•Language Awareness•2019

The paper develops the concept of language awareness (LA) by considering the material-social-discursive nexus of the communicative situation that affords professional practice. It also presents a mixed-methods study that provides a deeper and multi-layered understanding of LA in action and sets out a methodological framework for similar research in healthcare communication. Our study addresses: (i) the need for LA (re)conceptualisation in researc…

  • Scaling the incommensurate: Discourses of sustainability in the Western Isles of Scotland

Thomas Bartlett, Tom Bartlett•CHAPTER•Critical Policy Discourse Analysis•2019

This chapter examines negotiations over fishing rights and the local management of marine resources in the Western Isles of Scotland and discusses how competing discourses of sustainability are constructed by a fishing-dependent community and national and transnational governmental bodies. The chapter describes the socioeconomic and cultural conditions behind the competing discourses, including the introduction of the 2015 Community Empowerment (…

This volume offers fresh perspectives on the political, military, religious, social, cultural, intellectual, economic, and environmental history of early modern Ireland and situates these discussions in global and comparative contexts. • The Cambridge History of Ireland: Volume 3, 1730-1880

Open Access•Brendan Smith, Jane Ohlmeyer et al.•BOOK•Cambridge History of Ireland•2018

The eighteenth and nineteenth centuries was an era of continuity as well as change. Though properly portrayed as the era of 'Protestant Ascendancy' it embraces two phases - the eighteenth century when that ascendancy was at its peak; and the nineteenth century when the Protestant elite sustained a determined rear-guard defence in the face of the emergence of modern Catholic nationalism. Employing a chronology that is not bound by traditional date…

  • Rethinking (Context of) Culture in Systemic Functional Linguistics 1

Thomas Bartlett, Tom Bartlett•CHAPTER•Perspectives from Systemic…•2018

This chapter shows that the standard Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) model of the language-culture relation. It outlines more detail below lags behind existing theoretical work in the discipline so that, through following the trajectory of existing ideas, a modified and compatible model can be developed. The accepted corollary of this perspective is that an entire social system, or culture, is the set of relations between the different soci…

    Open Access•Jaspal Naveel Singh, Thomas Bartlett•ARTICLE•AILA Review•2017

This paper represents voices of community organizers on Barra, a small island in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland. Although, arguably Barra is geographically and socio-politically located in the peripheries of Scotland, Britain and Europe, the island has been a center of North Atlantic maritime trade networks for centuries. In the current phase of Europeanization and devolution of powers within the United Kingdom, the community finds itself in the po…

  • Ireland, Empire, and Union, 1690–1801

Thomas Bartlett•CHAPTER•Ireland And The British Empire•2005

This chapter considers Ireland's position and role in the British Empire from the 1690s through to the Act of Union. It highlights Irish colonial commerce and the insensitive action of the English Parliament in restricting Irish trade. Irish Protestants then sought an Irish partnership in the imperium and demanded access to imperial trade. The Union debates of 1799 to 1800 in the British and Irish Parliaments revealed how far notions of Empire ha…
