  • An Archaeological Survey of Polyaigos: Landscape, Lidar, and Long-Term History on the Largest “Uninhabited” Island in the Aegean

Alex R Knodell, Demetrios Athanasoulis et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Archaeology•2026

This article presents an archaeological survey of the island of Polyaigos, undertaken in 2022 by the Small Cycladic Islands Project (SCIP). Since 2019, SCIP has surveyed 87 uninhabited islands in the southern Aegean, most of which are well under 1 km2 in size. The larger island of Polyaigos (18 km2) was included in the project in order to investigate the importance of island size (among other things) in long-term population and land-use dynamics.…

  • An interdisciplinary workflow for the comprehensive study of ancient quarried landscapes

    Open Access•Richard Levitan, Evan I Levine et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2025•References: 13

Quarries are information-rich anthropic landscapes, but their unique characteristics often limit the effectiveness of traditional archaeological documentation strategies. Here, the authors present a novel interdisciplinary method for the documentation and analysis of these landscapes, focusing on two ancient marble quarries on the Mediterranean island of Naxos. The workflow, combining lidar, photogrammetry, sculptural and architectural study, geo…

  • Colossus at the Crossroads: Reexamining a Hellenistic Cult Statue of Herakles from Kleonai

Richard Levitan, Rebecca Levitan et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Archaeology•2023•References: 23

The small, second-century BCE temple of Herakles at Kleonai has long been a landmark in the southern Corinthia, visited by early travelers in Greece and thoroughly studied and published. Less attention, however, has been paid to the in situ fragmentary colossal cult statue of Herakles, and questions concerning its date, artist, and sculptural “type” remain unresolved. The fragmentary nature, colossal scale, and significant context of the fragment…

  • An island archaeology of uninhabited landscapes: Offshore islets near Paros, Greece (the Small Cycladic Islands Project)

Alex R Knodell, Demetrios Athanasoulis et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Island and Coastal…•2020•Cited by: 9•References: 11

The Small Cycladic Islands Project (SCIP) is a diachronic archaeological survey of numerous small, uninhabited islands in the Cycladic archipelago. There is a rich history of archaeological survey and comparative island archaeology in the Aegean. SCIP narrows the size of an individual island survey, and at the same time expands the conceptual and comparative scope by surveying multiple islands with the same set of methods and in the context of th…

  • Defining Suitability in Mixed Agropastoral Societies: A Case Study from Bactria in Northern Afghanistan

    Daniel Plekhov, Evan I Levine•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2020•References: 32

This paper explores the concept of suitability within applications of Ideal Distribution Models (IDMs). Specifically, we investigate the effectiveness of single measures of suitability in contexts where diverse local populations practised a range of subsistence strategies with different environmental requirements and sociocultural consequences. To do so, we draw on legacy survey data from northern Afghanistan, within the historic region of Bactri…

  • Reconsidering Rag-i Bibi: Authority and audience in the Sasanian East

    Open Access•Evan I Levine, Daniel Plekhov•ARTICLE•Afghanistan•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 32

The Sasanian rock-cut relief of Rag-i Bibi, located in northern Afghanistan, offers a unique opportunity to reconsider issues of audience, memory, and power in rupestral art. Found over 1,000 kilometers east of the nearest attested Sasanian rupestral relief, Rag-i Bibi is geographically and iconographically distinct, displaying elements of local subject matter, artistic style, and political symbolism. Through comparison to reliefs in the Sasanian…

  • An Archaic Greek Écriture Féminine? Epigrammatic dedications by Telestodike of Paros

Open Access•Evan I Levine, Edgar Tello García et al.•ARTICLE•Cuadernos de Arqueología de la…•2015

Contemporary scholarship on the female dedicatory habit in the archaic Greek world has engaged with this subject as a means to discuss broader social questions regarding the roles of women in this period. This study proposes that current approaches to ancient gender can be strengthened through a critical shift in perspective, achieved through the application of innovative archaeological theory and modern feminist social and literary theory. To su…
