  • Faecal biomarkers as evidence of human presence in the caves of Kraków-Częstochowa Upland

Open Access•Natalia Gryczewska, Marcin Sulwiński et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2025•References: 2

This study investigates past human presence at cave sites by analysing faecal biomarkers—specifically sterols, bile acids and phosphorus-and compares the results with available archaeological data. The research concentrates on seven sites in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland (S Poland): Biśnik Cave, Bramka Rockshelter, Ciasna Cave, Łabajowa Cave, Łokietka Cave, Sąspowska Zachodnia Cave, and Shelter in Smoleń III. It involved analysing sediment sample…

    Open Access•Magdalena Sudoł-Procyk, Grzegorz Osipowicz et al.•ARTICLE•Sprawozdania Archeologiczne•2024

The site no. 9 in Kleszczowa is located within the region of the so-called Barańskie Mountains, within a distance of ca. 7 km from the locality named Pilica, Silesian voiv. In the course of the field survey and trial excavations conducted in the area of the site since 2012 relics of the Late Palaeolithic settlement were discovered. Based on technological and typological traits flint inventory obtained from the site was classified as typical of th…

  • Use of spatial analysis in the mining field in the Udorka Valley. Introduction to geoarchaeological search for flint workshops at site 24 in Poręba Dzierżna (Małopolska Province, southern Poland)

    Open Access•Hubert Binnebesel, Magdalena Sudoł-Procyk•ARTICLE•Archaeologia Lituana•2024

The prehistoric chocolate flint mine in the Udorka Valley (site 24 in Poręba Dzierżna, Lesser Poland Voivodeship, southern Poland) has been under excavation since 2018. It is the first mine of this raw material discovered outside the Świętokrzyskie Mountains. The currently available dating indicates that the mine was used in the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods.Spatial analysis of artifacts from the fill of the mine shaft allowed for the reconstr…

  • Macrolithic retouched blades from Kałdus and Stare Marzy: Foreign technology and new ideology in the lithic traditions of the TRB communities in the Lower Vistula region

    Open Access•Kamil Adamczak, Magdalena Sudoł-Procyk•ARTICLE•Sprawozdania Archeologiczne•2024•References: 6

At the turn of the 20th and 21st century, over a dozen macrolithic retouched blades or their fragments were obtained from archaeological sites at Kałdus and Stare Marzy, located in the Lower Vistula region in northern Poland. The context of deposition links the blades to the settlements of the younger Funnel Beaker culture (3650/3500–3300/3100 BC). This article presents and discusses the results of morphological, technological, and raw material i…

    Open Access•Magdalena Sudoł-Procyk•ARTICLE•Archaeologia Polona•2023

The scientific work under review was published in 2023 by the University of Franche-Comté (France) and focuses on the reconstruction of the migrations of reindeers, being the main wild game for hunters living in the territory of France at the decline of the Pleistocene, in order to understand the mobility of human groups in the last cold episode of the Palaeolithic, i.e., between 30,000 and 15,000 cal BC.The book was written by Laure Fontana, a r…

    Open Access•M T Krajcarz, M Baca et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 65

The paper focuses on the Pleistocene deposits in Perspektywiczna Cave, southern Poland, related to cave hyena ( Crocuta crocuta ). We used direct radiocarbon dating of hyena fossils supported by genetic and stable isotope analyses to infer the paleobiology of this population. Radiocarbon dating of 19 hyena remains suggests long inhabitation of the region during early MIS 3, around 50–34 ky cal BP. The youngest among our dates, 34,355–33,725 cal B…

  • Tracing ephemeral human occupation through archaeological, palaeoenvironmental and molecular proxies at Łabajowa Cave

    Open Access•Natalia Gryczewska, M Kot et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2023•References: 5

Confirming ephemeral human occupation is a crucial issue in cave archaeology. The project 'Tracing human presence in caves of Polish Jura' focuses on the application of molecular methods to decode the history of past human activities in cave sediments in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. The results will be compared with archaeological and palaeoecological proxies

Many varieties of siliceous raw materials can be found in the territory of Poland. Known exclusively from in situ outcrops in the Holy Cross Mountains area until recently, striped flint is distinctive in terms of its technical and visual features. The authors present the state of knowledge about the variety of striped flint from the Ryczów Upland, the outcrops of which were found only about a decade ago. Open Access•Magdalena Sudoł-Procyk•ARTICLE•Študijné zvesti Archeologického…•2021

New data obtained from the central part of the Krakw-Czstochowa Upland cast an interesting light on the issues of the origin of chocolate flint and the ways it was used by prehistoric communities inhabiting the region. Earlier interpretations indicated that the chocolate flint found at prehistoric sites in the Krakw-Czstochowa Upland was imported from the outcrops in the north-eastern part of the Holy Cross Mountains. Researches on prehistoric flint mines are currently widely developing, as they allow a deep insight into the past economy, early industry, and the network of trading routes and inter-regional contacts. In the territory of Poland and in general, Central Europe, one of the most important flint raw materials was an Upper Jurassic chert, so-called chocolate flint. In this paper are presented preliminary results of the research of chocolate flint mine…

In Poland, the domestic cat is a common species in medieval deposits. Only a few finds of cat remains of pre-medieval age have been reported from Poland to date, including several specimens from deposits older than the Roman Period, dated to the pre-Roman Period and even the Bronze Age.
