The interaction of distant technologies: Bridging Central Europe using a techno-typological comparison of spindle whorls
The study of prehistoric textile production requires the excavation of sites with exceptional organic preservation. Here, the authors focus on thread production using evidence from two fourth-millennium BC pre-Alpine wetland sites: Arbon-Bleiche 3 in Switzerland and Bad Buchau-Torwiesen II in southern Germany. A comparison of the spindle whorls from these two settlements with a contemporaneous East-Central European dataset suggests that multiple …
Lake Dwellings in Baden-Württemberg. Conservation Projects In Situ at Lake Constance and the Federsee Moor
The Baden-Württemberg shoreline of Lake Constance and the lakes and moors of Upper Swabia contain important prehistoric wetland sites. From 1979, new research has brought up not only important finds and scientific results but also increasing information about bank erosion in the lakes and desiccation in the moorlands. At Lake Constance, early attempts were made in the 1980s to protect sites threatened by erosion by covering them with geo-textile …
Erosion Hazards and Efficient Preservation Measures in Prehistoric Cultural Layers in the Littoral of Lake Constance (Germany, Switzerland)
Many Neolithic and Bronze Age cultural layers and pile fields embedded in sediments at the shorelines of pre-alpine lakes in France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, and Italy (in part UNESCO World Heritage Sites), are threatened by littoral erosion which is partly caused by human agency. Based on measurements of the wave field at four prehistoric sites on Lake Constance (Germany, Switzerland) we discuss the role of passenger ship navigation. We al…
Cultivation of choice: New insights into farming practices at Neolithic lakeshore sites
Flax cultivation and textile production in Neolithic wetland settlements on Lake Constance and in Upper Swabia (south-west Germany)
Traverser les Alpes au Néolithique
The revision of a series of information allows us to discuss some questions related to contacts between societies living North and South of the Alps between the beginning ofthe V millennium and the middle of the V millennium BC, period which coincides with the development of peasant societies and the gradual introduction of metallurgy. These finds often relate to jewels and prestige goods made of green stone from the Piedmont, flint from the Vene…
