The authoritarian syndrome as an attempt to restore control and its mediating role in anti‐Semitism and xenophobia in Germany
For many people, the coronavirus pandemic meant an enormous and existential loss of control. At the same time, an increase in right‐wing extremist attitudes like xenophobia could be observed in Germany. In this study, we hypothesize that the loss of control caused by the pandemic has contributed to the rise in xenophobic and anti‐Semitic attitudes in Germany. We propose that this occurs through an attempt to restore control via elements of a revi…
Exploring different types of the authoritarian syndrome
By using Latent Profile Analysis (LPA), we identified eight profiles, each representing different combinations or "alloys" of the authoritarian syndrome and associated sociopolitical attitudes. Our findings reveal that authoritarian dispositions do not uniformly correlate with overt prejudice or resentment; instead, they manifest in complex, socially influenced forms. While some profiles exhibit strong authoritarian aggression and conspiracy beli…
It was beyond my horizon
Violent conflicts and social differentiation shape prison life, as well as the work that is carried out in the prison system. However, there has been little analysis so far of the perspective of prison officers. In this study, we draw on a publicised incident of resentment in the prison system to analyse how staff deal with conflict. The qualitative study adopts a socio-psychological perspective and an interpretive paradigm (depth hermeneutic ana…
Is the migrant share really the problem? Size of migrant population and individual authoritarianism as major determinants of xenophobic attitudes
Contact hypothesis and threat hypothesis are among the most influential theories of xenophobia. The former proposes that intergroup contact may reduce prejudice. The latter suggests that a large outgroup may increase xenophobic attitudes. Using data of a 2018 German representative sample (N = 2,016), we employed multilevel analyses. As predictors, we looked at outgroup size, gross domestic product, and unemployment rate on a county level. On the …

Mental health and life satisfaction in East and West Germany
Objective: The reunification of Germany after the separation between 1949 and 1990 has offered a unique chance of studying the impact of socialization, political transformation, and migration on mental health. The purpose of this article was to compare mental distress, resources, and life satisfaction (1) between residents of East and West Germany and migrants who have fled from East to West Germany before reunification and (2) between three gene…
Autoritäre Dynamiken in unsicheren Zeiten
Antisemitismus in Berlin.
On the association of interpersonal trust with right-wing extremist and authoritarian attitudes
Right-wing extremism and authoritarianism have been identified as major, if not the major threats to democracy in recent years. The rise of right-wing extremist and populist parties in many democratic countries throughout the world has renewed the interest in identifying the roots and determinants of these anti-democratic attitudes. Even though factors on many levels of analysis (macro-, meso- and micro-level) have been taken into consideration a…
Covid‐19‐Related Conspiracy Myths, Beliefs, and Democracy‐Endangering Consequences
Since late 2020, protests against government measures to contain the Covid‐19 pandemic have swept across Germany. At the forefront of these protests was the Querdenker Movement, a heterogeneous alliance of ordinary citizens, hippies, esotericists, opponents of conventional medicine, Christian fundamentalists, and right‐wing extremists bonded by their shared belief in conspiracy myths. This contribution draws upon the theoretical framework of the …

Secondary authoritarianism – the economy and right-wing extremist attitudes in contemporary Germany
In this essay the thesis of a secondary authoritarian dynamic governing contemporary German society is presented. The author follows Sigmund Freud’s distinction between primary and secondary masses – a leader as idealized object of the group members constitutes the first, an abstract object produces the latter mass. To underpin his thesis the author argues with empirical findings of the longitudinal research project ‘Leipzig-Studies on Authoritar…

The Great Recession and Group‐Based Control
Economic crises can threaten individuals’ sense of control. At the same time, these crises often result in collective responses, such as class‐based protest (e.g., the 99%), but also nationalism or xenophobia. We investigated how personal consequences of economic crises lead to both intragroup and intergroup responses and the role of control for these effects. Studies 1 and 2 show that personal income and fear of economic descent reduce people's …

Euroscepticism and Right-Wing Extremist Attitudes in Germany
Euroscepticism is associated with a new cleavage between the 'losers' and the 'winners' of globalisation. Current research also indicates that right-wing extremist, racist, and anti-democratic attitudes are more prevalent in lower status groups, particularly those struggling with societal change. These findings are combined with a unique data set covering both topics and thus add to the growing literature on Euroscepticism while also exploring th…

Early-Career Researchers' Perceptions of the Prevalence of Questionable Research Practices, Potential Causes, and Open Science
Young researchers of today will shape the field in the future. In light of current debates about social psychology's research culture, this exploratory survey assessed early-career researchers' beliefs (N = 88) about the prevalence of questionable research practices (QRPs), potential causes, and open science as a possible solution. While there was relative consensus that outright fraud is an exception, a majority of participants believed that som…

Commodified Bodies
Commodified Bodies examines the social practice of organ transplantation and trafficking and scrutinises the increasingly neoliberal tendencies in the medical system. It analyses phenomena such as the denomination of human body parts as "raw materials" and "commodities," or the arguments used by the proponents for a free market solution. Moreover, it argues that modern medicine is still linked with its religious roots. The commodification of body…
Between commodification and altruism
The German transplant law (TGP) of 1997 only recognises organ donation if the donor agrees (‘extended consent’) and if done for altruistic reasons. Several alternatives will be discussed here, including incentives and passive agreement. Based upon a representative survey, the authors examined the attitudes of Germans towards several European models of organ donation and their attitude towards organ donation in general whilst living and after deat…

Validation and Standardization of the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Screener (GAD-7) in the General Population
BACKGROUND: The 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7) is a practical self-report anxiety questionnaire that proved valid in primary care. However, the GAD-7 was not yet validated in the general population and thus far, normative data are not available. OBJECTIVES: To investigate reliability, construct validity, and factorial validity of the GAD-7 in the general population and to generate normative data. RESEARCH DESIGN: Nationally rep…

Fetische, Körper und Ressentiment
The social function of violence was described from the early beginnings of social research - not only in studies of in prejudice. But with the study Autorität und Familie, which was published in 1936, and The Authoritarian Personality, which was published in 1950, the strong connection between violence and subjectivation was figured out as a critique of the society. In this article the thesis of a „secondary authoritarian“ dynamic is developed. F…
