America's Book
Poetry Wars
Colin Wells's book stands in a long historiographical tradition on the early American Republic that argues that waging war using pens and printing presses was no less important to the founding of a new American nation than warfare fought with bullets, bayonets, and cannonballs. Wells's great—and much-needed—contribution to this literature is his focus on the role of poetry in forming, framing, and fracturing the politics and identity of a young U…
The Oxford Handbook of the Bible in America
The Oxford Handbook of the Bible in America is designed to address a noticeable void in resources focused on analyzing the Bible in America in specific historical moments and in relationship to specific institutions and cultural expressions. Paying attention to the Bible from its earliest appearance in seventeenth-century New England up through its presence and usage in twenty-first century America, this handbook takes seriously the fact that the…
The Bible and Environmentalism
The Bible describes the satisfying and joyful appointment given to Adam and Eve to serve and to keep the Garden of Eden, but their disastrous choice to know evil spoiled people and their life-support system. In the New World, millennia later, settlers in the Eden of America again lost ground, but between 1864 and 1964 they were alerted, principally by five biblically informed people—George Perkins Marsh, John Muir, Theodore Roosevelt, Aldo Leopol…
The Bible and Indigenous Language Translations in the Americas
Scholarship on Native Americans and the Bible has often focused on the 1663 Indian Bible produced under the direction of John Eliot, the English missionary. This chapter expands the purview of European translational activity in the Americas between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries by focusing on a fuller sample range of translations into indigenous languages. Doing so reveals the astonishing range of Bible related translations undertaken by…
The Bible and the Military
This chapter explores three ways that “the Bible” and the military interrelate in America. Editions of the Bible targeted for distribution among American military personnel have taken a number of different material forms. Military-edition Bibles are material objects that tell stories in which God, divine revelation, the military, and the nation acquire meanings together. Military Bibles also function as “place-holders” for “religion,” in broader …
The Orthodox Christians and the Bible
Orthodox Christians (Eastern or Oriental) regard the Bible as an integral but not exclusive part of tradition. They have historically encountered the Bible primarily through their liturgical worship. No fixed “canon” describes the role of the Bible in Orthodoxy. The history of the Orthodox Bible in America moved in stages that reflected the mission to First Peoples, arrival of Middle Eastern and Eastern European immigrants, and the catastrophic i…
The Bible and Jehovah’s Witnesses
This chapter offers an introduction to the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society or the Jehovah’s Witnesses, with particular attention to their distinctive Bible-reading strategies. The aim is broad description rather than detailed commentary and is highly selective owing to the limited space available. As much as possible, the study relies on examples of interpretation drawn from (more or less recent) Watch Tower publications. There are also a few…
The King James Only Movement
An evangelical movement born of last century’s culture wars, King James Onlyism offers a glimpse into the way evangelicals view and use their Bibles. Having located the source of apostasy and cultural waywardness in the production of new biblical texts and translations, King James Onlyism insists that the only way to protect Christianity from collapsing into rampant subjectivism is to remain singularly faithful to the King James Bible translation…
The Bible in American Politics
The Bible has been tremendously influential in American politics by informing grand political theories and by justifying specific policy positions. This chapter analyzes the Bible’s role in political metanarratives and its use in policy positions. From the Puritans’ invocation of Exodus and the City on a Hill through Cold War evangelicals’ interpretations of Revelation, political metanarratives have been animated by divergent and contentious read…
Bestsellers in Nineteenth-Century America
Bestsellers in Nineteenth Century America seeks to produce for students novels, poems and other printed material that sold extremely well when they first appeared in the United States. Many of the most famous American works of the nineteenth century that we know today — such as Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick — were not widely read when they first appeared. This collection seeks to offer its readers a glimpse at the literature that lit up the literar…

Charles Hodge
One is reminded of just how fickle a mistress Fame can be when considering how the renown of certain historical figures only grows with time, while the reputations of countless others fade in the light of posterity. The luster of Charles Hodge’s fame has dimmed since his death in 1878. Whatever judgements exist, the truth remains that in the life of Charles Hodge one finds a stunning panoramic view of nineteenth-century Protestantism. His story t…
Charles Hodge
Charles Hodge (1797-1878) was one of nineteenth-century America's leading theologians, owing in part to a lengthy teaching career, voluminous writings, and a faculty post at one of the nation's most influential schools, Princeton Theological Seminary. Surprisingly, the only biography of this towering figure was written by his son, just two years after his death. Paul Gutjahr's book, therefore, is the first modern critical biography of a man some …
“Graces of the Spirit”
Chapter forty-four is mainly concerned with the years immediately after Sarah’s death, an event that marked Hodge for years to come. His profound grief found some solace in the presence of Mary and his grandson in his household at the time of Sarah’s death. Archie returned with his family from India in 1850, which also proved helpful to his recovery. Hodge remarried in 1852 to Mary Hunter Stockton Hodge, a woman he had known since she was fifteen…
