  • The Interest Rate Effects of Government Debt Maturity

    Open Access•Jagjit S Chadha, Philip Turner et al.•ARTICLE•World Economy•2025

Using an empirical model, this paper finds that shortening the average maturity of US Treasury debt held outside the Federal Reserve by 1 year reduces the 5‐year forward 10‐year yield by between 130 and 150 basis points. Based on a pre‐crisis period, these estimates suggest portfolio balance effects are unlikely to reflect only post‐crisis market conditions. These findings also offer a partial explanation for the Greenspan conundrum: the fact tha…

  • A Consideration of Fiscal Targetry

    Open Access•Jagjit S Chadha•ARTICLE•Scottish Journal of Political…•2025•References: 1

The UK's current fiscal rules and framework are not fit for purpose. Try as they might, the rules are more “honor'd in the breach than the observance”. They have introduced an unintended incentive on the margin (at fiscal events) to trade off government investment for government consumption. They have led to a trivialisation of the fiscal policy debate centred on arbitrary fiscal space. And taken attention away from the failures of economic polic…

  • Dating business cycles in the United Kingdom, 1700-2010

    Open Access•Stephen Broadberry, Jagjit S Chadha et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic History Review•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 41

This paper constructs a new chronology of the business cycle in the United Kingdom from 1700 on an annual basis and from 1920 on a quarterly basis to 2010. The new chronology points to several observations about the business cycle. First, the cycle has significantly increased in duration and amplitude over time. Second, contractions have become less frequent but are as persistent and costly as at other times in history. Third, the typical recessi…

  • Older Adult Inmates

    C Snyder, Katherine Van Wormer et al.•ARTICLE•Social Work•2009•Cited by: 5•References: 2

Older adult inmates have grown both in proportion and in number due to the confluence of a number offactors. This aging of the prison population has created a host of policy and practice issues that encompass justice considerations, cost containment issues, and biopsychosocial care needs. The older prisoner's physical, social, and psychological needs are complex and necessitate gerontologically based service delivery systems. The intent of this a…

  • Shoe‐leather Costs Reconsidered

    Open Access•Jagjit S Chadha, Andrew G Haldane et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•1998

It has recently been suggested by Robert Lucas that `shoe-leather' costs of inflation may amount to as much as 1% of GNP in the United States. This paper assesses the UK evidence for the period 1970-1994. Similar estimates to those of Lucas are found using his original specification, but a preferred functional form using a semi-log interest elasticity of demand for money reveals a 0.22 % of GNP gain in perpetuity following a sustained fall in nom…
