Sibling disclosure and adolescents’ coping from before to during the Covid-19 pandemic: A longitudinal study
The extraordinary disruptions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic created a unique context to investigate the links between family communication and adolescent adjustment. Given that widespread stay-at-home orders increased time spent in the family setting, the present study examined reciprocal links between older and younger adolescent siblings' disclosure toward each other and concurrent and prospective links between those disclosures and the…
Direct and indirect effects of maternal and sibling intimacy on adolescents' volunteering via social responsibility values: A longitudinal study
This study investigates the direct and indirect effects of maternal and sibling relational intimacy on adolescents' volunteering behaviors via their social responsibility values. Participants included two adolescents (50% female; M age = 1 year) and one parent (85% female; M age = 45 years) from 682 families ( N = 2046) from an ongoing longitudinal study. Adolescents self-reported their intimacy with mothers and siblings (Time 1), social responsi…
Do Early-Life Social, Behavioral, and Health Exposures Increase Later-Life Arthritis Incidence
Objectives: This study investigates direct and indirect influences of childhood social, behavioral, and health exposures on later-life osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis development. Methods: Drawing from cumulative inequality theory and six waves of the Health and Retirement Study (2004–2014), we estimate structural equation modeling-based discrete-time survival analysis of the association between six childhood exposure domains and both ost…
Changes in family chaos and family relationships during the Covid-19 pandemic: Evidence from a longitudinal study
The purpose of this article was to explore how family chaos, parenting processes, parent-child relationship qualities, and sibling relationship qualities changed before versus the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants included one parent and two adolescent-aged children from 682 families (2,046 participants). Parents and youth participating in an ongoing longitudinal study in five Midwestern states in the United States completed an …
Using Predictions and Marginal Effects to Compare Groups in Regression Models for Binary Outcomes
Methods for group comparisons using predicted probabilities and marginal effects on probabilities are developed for regression models for binary outcomes. Unlike approaches based on the comparison of regression coefficients across groups, the methods we propose are unaffected by the scalar identification of the coefficients and are expressed in the natural metric of the outcome probability. While we develop our approach using binary logit with tw…
Avoiding the Major Causes of Death: Does Childhood Misfortune Reduce the Likelihood of Being Disease Free in Later Life
Consistent with cumulative inequality theory, these findings reveal that experiencing multiple types of misfortune during childhood decreases the likelihood of remaining disease free in later life, but engaging in health behaviors, such as physical activity, can help to ameliorate some of the noxious effects of early misfortune

Early Origins of Adult Cancer Risk Among Men and Women: Influence of Childhood Misfortune
These findings underscore the importance of examining multiple domains of misfortune because the type and amount of misfortune influence cancer risk in different ways
Childhood Misfortune and Handgrip Strength Among Black, White, and Hispanic Americans
The relationship between childhood exposures and adult HGS varied by the type of misfortune, but there was no evidence that the relationship varied by race/ethnicity. The significant and enduring Hispanic disadvantage in HGS warrants greater attention in gerontology
Recent development of propensity score methods in observational studies: Multi-categorical treatment, causal mediation, and heterogeneity
This article reviews and comments on three major expansions of propensity score methods in recent decades. First, how to use generalized propensity scores to tackle multi-categorical or continuous treatment variables is shown in procedures of propensity score regression adjustment and propensity score weighting. Second, the counterfactual framework of causal inference in the analysis of mediation mechanisms is reviewed and the decomposition of th…
Does childhood misfortune raise the risk of acute myocardial infarction in adulthood
The Clergy Occupational Distress Index (Codi): Background and Findings from Two Samples of Clergy
Obesity, Labeling, and Psychological Distress in Late-Childhood and Adolescent Black and White Girls: The Distal Effects of Stigma
The stigma of childhood obesity has the potential to affect psychological development during the early life course, but few studies examine whether experiencing stigma in childhood and adolescence has lasting ramifications for mental health during the transition to adulthood. Integrating modified labeling theory with a life course perspective, this study examined how obesity at different ages affects psychological distress in late adolescence usi…
Predictors of Entry into Age-Discordant Relationships Among Adolescent Girls
Teenage girls in age-discordant relationships remain of concern for healthy development and well-being. We examine whether factors from several sociological frameworks—self-esteem, deviance, social ecology, family cohesion, and religious involvement—predict entry into such relationships. With longitudinal data on 1,537 adolescent girls, we use structural equation modeling to assess risk and protective factors by age group. Results indicate that f…
Party nationalization in a multilevel context: Where's the variance
Do the Psychological Effects of Stigma Linger After Obese Adolescents Transition to Normal Weight
Trajectories of Body Mass and Self-Concept in Black and White Girls: The Lingering Effects of Stigma
As a stigmatizing condition, obesity may lead to the internalization of devalued labels and threats to self-concept. Modified labeling theory suggests that the effects of stigma may outlive direct manifestations of the discredited characteristic itself. This article considers whether obesity's effects on self-concept linger when obese youth enter the normal body mass range. Using longitudinal data from the National Growth and Health Study on 2,20…
Depressive Symptoms Among Adolescent Girls in Relationships with Older Partners: Causes and Lasting Effects
Parental Depression and Child Outcomes: The Mediating Effects of Abuse and Neglect
Using longitudinal data on 1,813 children and parents from a nationally representative child-welfare sample, National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being (NSCAW), this study investigated physically abusive and neglectful parenting as mediating the effects of parent depression on child mental health by developmental stage. Findings from latent growth models indicated that parental depression had a significant impact on child outcomes for all…
Children of Misfortune: Early Adversity and Cumulative Inequality in Perceived Life Trajectories
Adversity early in life may alter pathways of aging, but what interpretive processes can soften the blow of early insults? Drawing from cumulative inequality theory, the authors analyze trajectories of life evaluations and then consider whether early adversity offsets favorable expectations for the future. Results reveal that early adversity contributes to more negative views of the past but rising expectations for the future. Early adversity als…
Modeling repeated measures of dichotomous data: Testing whether the within-person trajectory of change varies across levels of between-person factors
Service use and multi-sector use for mental health problems by youth in contact with child welfare
