  • Kind of Mine, Kind of Not

    Open Access•Rebecca Mardon, Janice Denegri‐knott et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Consumer Research•2023•Cited by: 7•References: 59

The objects we consume increasingly exist in digital form, from audiobooks and digital photographs to social media profiles and avatars. Digital objects are often argued to be less valued, personally meaningful, and self-relevant than their physical counterparts and are consequently dismissed as poor candidates for possession. Yet, studies have identified highly meaningful, even irreplaceable, digital possessions. In this article, we account for …

  • Valuing digital possessions

    Open Access•Janice Denegri‐knott, Janice Denegri-Knott et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Computer-Mediated…•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 9

In this article, we introduce an affordance-orientated approach for the study of digital possessions. We identify affordances as a source of value for digital possessions and argue that dominant meaning-orientated approaches do not enable us to fully appreciate these sources of value. Our work recognizes that value is released and experienced in “the doing”—people must do things with digital objects to locate and obtain value in and from them. We…

  • Politicising the study of sustainable living practices

    Janice Denegri‐knott, Janice Denegri-Knott et al.•ARTICLE•Consumption Markets & Culture•2018•Cited by: 22•References: 78

In studies of consumption, social theories of practice foreground the purchasing and use of resources not for intrinsic pleasure but rather in the routine accomplishment of ‘normal’ ways of living. In this paper we argue that a key strength of theories of practice lies in their ability to expose questions of power in the construction of normality, but that this has been largely overlooked. Since practice theories are leveraged in understanding ur…

  • Mp3

    Janice Denegri‐knott, Janice Denegri-Knott•ARTICLE•Consumption Markets & Culture•2015•Cited by: 4•References: 7

In this article the MP3 is described as a marketplace icon. The MP3 is a good proxy to understand digital virtual objects of consumption and market mediation in the digital economy. Using the concept of stewardship as a type of compromised possession reliant on devices, software, market mediators and consumers themselves coming together in a particular way, the article maps out some practices that define MP3 consumption today

  • Tracking Prosumption Work on eBay

    Open Access•Janice Denegri‐knott, Janice Denegri-Knott et al.•ARTICLE•American Behavioral Scientist•2012•Cited by: 9•References: 29

Ritzer suggests that we are witnessing the emergence of a prosumer society where early forms of prosumption (the gas station, the automatic teller machine, McDonalds, etc.) are now being universalized across industries, product and service categories, and geographies. This essay presents the results of a qualitative study of the lived experience of "doing prosumption," in particular, how prosumption work in user-generated media environments is ex…

  • Love it. Buy it. Sell it’

    Open Access•Janice Denegri‐knott, Mike Molesworth•ARTICLE•Journal of Consumer Culture•2010•Cited by: 10•References: 8

Our work adds to existing research on eBay by presenting it as a space where consumers’ imaginations are stimulated and where their psychological work to manufacture ever new wants and desires allows for a reflection of consumer tastes and practices. To do so, we conceptualize eBay as a digital virtual space that allows consumers to browse at length through a plethora of goods, test preferences and potentially reflect on the significance of objec…

  • Concepts and practices of digital virtual consumption

    Janice Denegri‐knott, Mike Molesworth•ARTICLE•Consumption Markets & Culture•2010•Cited by: 29•References: 31

Despite the popularity of online spaces that simulate aspects of consumption?like experiences (online virtual worlds, video games and interactive functions on online retailers) conceptual tools that aim to comprehend such consumer practices are yet to emerge. In an effort to better understand them this paper puts forward a taxonomy that may help us capture emerging consumer behavior in the digital virtual terrain in relation to virtual and materi…

  • Cyberdelinquency

Open Access•Mike Molesworth, Janice Denegri‐knott•OTHER•The Blackwell Encyclopedia of…•2008

Cyberdelinquency is a composite term that captures the recognition of new deviances or crimes related to the online behavior of young people. Although delinquency and juvenile delinquency often have specific legal definitions, the terms usually refer to antisocial behavior by minors that may include “petty” crimes such as theft or vandalism, or other behaviors such as bullying or drunkenness. Although similar behaviors may be observed in adults, …

  • Digital Play and the Actualization of the Consumer Imagination

    Open Access•Mike Molesworth, Janice Denegri‐knott et al.•ARTICLE•Games and Culture•2007•Cited by: 6•References: 6

In this article, the authors consider emerging consumer practices in digital virtual spaces. Building on constructions of consumer behavior as both a sense-making activity and a resource for the construction of daydreams, as well as anthropological readings of performance, the authors speculate that many performances during digital play are products of consumer fantasy. The authors develop an interpretation of the relationship between the real an…

  • Sinking the Online “Music Pirates

    Open Access•Janice Denegri‐knott•ARTICLE•Journal of Computer-Mediated…•2006•Cited by: 10•References: 8

This paper aims to evaluate power relations between corporate elites and online music file-sharers on the Web. By documenting changes in discourse occurring between 1998 and 2004 over the labeling of music file-sharing as deviant, it seeks to unveil how power machinates in establishing the parameters between acceptable and unacceptable behaviors In doing so, Foucault's work on power is used as a starting point for investigating strategies employe…

  • The Labeling Game

    Open Access•Janice Denegri‐knott, Janice Denegri-Knott et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science Computer Review•2005•Cited by: 11•References: 9

This article draws on sociological and psychological theory to explore the meaning application of deviance to behaviors observed on the Internet. First, definitions of deviancein online and offline contexts are discussed. Observations of the Internet as a so-called yet-to-be-normalized environment present a conflicting scenario for labeling emergent behaviors as deviant. The question stands as to whether devianceis an appropriate term to apply to…
