  • The Language Profiles Project

    Open Access•Avery Ozburn•ARTICLE•Language•2026

This article introduces a novel linguistics pedagogy resource called the Language Profiles Project (LPP), an open access resource for linguistics instructors and students. The goal of the LPP is to make it easier and more engaging for instructors in North American institutions to incorporate underrepresented languages into undergraduate linguistics courses. More concretely, a language profile combines data sets for use in linguistics courses with…

  • Tonal alternations in attributive constructions in Mwaghavul

Open Access•L J Griffin, Samuel Akinbo et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Linguistic…•2025

Mwaghavul is an underdocumented Chadic language spoken in Plateau State, Nigeria, by approximately 150,000 people (Blench 2011). Mwaghavul has tonal lowering in associative constructions, where the first nominal in the construction surfaces with low tone, regardless of its tone in isolation (Arokoyo & Fwangwar 2019). However, tonal lowering is not fully predictable, as some high tone nominals surface as mid tone in associative constructions, inst…

  • Ẹnà

Open Access•Avery Ozburn, Samuel Akinbo et al.•ARTICLE•Glossa a journal of general…•2024

This paper presents novel data from a Yorùbá language game called Ẹnà, an iterative affixation game that typically involves copying of vowels and tones onto a dummy syllable. Yorùbá VV sequences are all analyzed as disyllabic in existing literature, yet we find that Ẹnà treats them differently depending on their provenance: underlying VV sequences, those created from pronouns, and those derived through floating tone are treated as a single locus …

  • Eleven vowels of Imilike Igbo including ATR and RTR schwa

Open Access•Samuel Akinbo, Avery Ozburn et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the International…•2023•References: 2

In this paper, we examine the acoustics of vowels in the Imilike [ìmìlìkè] dialect of Igbo (Igboid, Niger-Congo), which has not previously been done. While Standard Igbo has eight vowels, previous auditorily-based research has identified eleven vowels in Imilike. Like Standard Igbo, Imilike contrasts vowels in Advanced/Retracted Tongue Root (ATR vs. RTR). We find that there are eleven vowels, distinguished most reliably by F1, B1, energy (dB) of …

  • Icy Targets in Karajá ATR Harmony as Contrast Preservation

Open Access•Avery Ozburn, Marjorie Leduc•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Annual…•2022

This paper presents a novel application of Contrast Preservation (Lubowicz 2003) to analyze a puzzling pattern of icy targets (Jurgec 2011). Icy targets are segments which harmonize but then block the spread of harmony, and a particularly theoretically challenging type is present in Karajá, in which derived and underlying [+ATR] high vowels behave differently (Ribeiro 2002;2012). We show that this harmony pattern can be successfully analyzed by c…

  • A Segment-specific Metric for Quantifying Participation in Harmony

    Open Access•Avery Ozburn•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Annual…•2019

Despite substantial phonological research into segmental co-occurrence patterns, there is currently no systematic way of calculating the gradient degree to which a segment participates in a harmony system, across its co-occurrences with all other segments. In this paper, I adopt the statistical concept of relative risk as a measure of participation in harmony. I compute both O/E values and the relative risk measure for vowels in corpora of three …

  • Ejective harmony in Lezgian

    Open Access•Avery Ozburn, Alexei Kochetov•ARTICLE•Phonology•2018

This paper contributes to the typology of laryngeal harmony by analysing an unusual case of long-distance laryngeal co-occurrence restrictions and alternations in Lezgian. This pattern, previously unmentioned in the phonological literature, is the first known case of alternations involving ejective harmony. In Lezgian, local processes mask the interaction of ejectives and plain voiceless stops. This is robustly supported by our dictionary analysi…

  • Largonji des Loucherbems

    Open Access•Avery Ozburn, Murray Schellenberg•ARTICLE•The Canadian Journal of…•2018•References: 7

This paper provides a novel Optimality Theoretic analysis of the 19th century French secret language Largonji. While Largonji is a reversal game, we show that it is a type not previously described, in which the first onset that is not an /l/ reverses, even if it is not at an edge. Thus, traditional approaches to reversal games, such as cross-anchoring, do not work for Largonji. However, our account does not require direct reference to onsets. Ins…
