  • The Holocaust in Mexican Literature

    Open Access•Maarten Van Delden•ARTICLE•European Review•2014•References: 1

Even though none of the recent reference works on Holocaust literature mentions the Mexican output on this topic, there exists a substantial tradition of literary works in Mexico that address the Holocaust. This essay offers a survey of this tradition, with a focus on how the authors of these works relate the Holocaust to the Mexican context from which they are writing. I argue that most of the Mexican authors I study treat the Holocaust as part …

  • Latin America and Contemporary Modernity

Open Access•Maarten Van Delden•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Latin American Research•2011

Domingues, José M. ( 2008 ) Latin America and Contemporary Modernity: A Sociological Interpretation , Routledge ( New York and London ), xix + 210 pp. £60.00 hbk . Modernity has had a lot of bad press among contemporary Latin American thinkers. Think of the work of Walter Mignolo, for whom modernity is linked not to science, progress or democracy, but to colonialism. From Mignolo's perspective, modernity is to blame for much of what is wrong with…

  • Mexico and the United States

    Maarten Van Delden•ARTICLE•Discourse•2001

The Mexican monthly review Vuelta was founded by Octavio Paz in 1976, shortly after a conflict with government had forced Paz and his collaborators to abandon Plural a periodical he had edited since 1971. For almost twenty-two years, until August 1998, when it ceased publication in wake of Paz's death, Vuelta occupied a preeminent position in Mexican intellectual life. Over years, Vuelta consistently presented itself as an independent publication…

  • Carlos Fuentes, Mexico, and Modernity

Denis Lynn Daly Heyck, Denis L Heyck et al.•ARTICLE•Hispanic Review•2000

This study of the work of the Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes argues that there is a fundamental paradox at the heart of Fuentes's vision of Mexico and in his role as novelist and critic in putting forth that vision. This paradox hinges on the tension between national identity and modernity. A significant internal conflict, van Delden contends, emerges in Fuentes's work from his attempt to stake out two different positions for himself, as experimen…

  • Gifts and Games in Frank Martinus Arion's Dubbelspel

    Maarten Van Delden•ARTICLE•Caribbean Quarterly•1997

Frank Martinus Arion's Dubbelspel , a brilliant exploration of Curacaoan society in the wake of the riots of May 30, 1 9692 opens with three epigraphs, two of which help to establish the decidedly ironic tone of the novel. The first epigraph is from an essay by Bertrand Russell, in which Russell speaks of how Tsar Nicholas M's indifference to politics was matched only by his passion for dominoes. Apparently, on the very eve of the 1917 Revolution…

  • Carlos Fuentes

    Maarten Van Delden•ARTICLE•Modern Language Notes•1993

In Valiente mundo nuevo (1990), his most recent collection of essays, Carlos Fuentes writes that he, too, believes modernity has come to an end. But there is a problem with Fuentes's position: the forces he describes as instrumental to the overcoming of modernity, he elsewhere defines as intrinsic to modernity. Fuentes himself is aware of this complication, for when he speaks of the exhaustion of lo que Jean-Francois Lyotard llama 'los metarrelat…
